Does any one hunt with colt clones ?
« on: May 24, 2007, 06:19:52 PM »
I wonder : do you hunt with colt clones or guns of simillar pressure handling abilities ?  Do you keep pressure down by loading lighter bullets like 200 or so OR do you just reduce velocity with heavy : 250++ grainers.  Whitetail and hogs and stumps are all targets of opportunity.  It is light enough to enjoy carrying it and keeping it pleasant is just fine, as long as it is effective..
I mean :
did I make a mistake ?  I would not want a revolver that could not double as a target of opportunity hunting option. I have not shot it yet, and will dump it if that is the case... I do not know nor have any one to cowboy shoot with, so ... come on folks help me out here.. I asked the sales man ( yeah yeah ) about the pistol expressly whether the Long Hunter was tightened up sufficiently to handle the more stout loads . He of course told me yes, and moved me off to the trigger and feel...
this thing better be able to kill something or daddy aint gonna be happy..!!

The biggest problem I see with using any Colt or clone in that capacity is the lack of REAL SIGHTS. I've owned several and now have picked up yet another which I've not yet shot. None of those I've owned in the past shot close enough to point of aim to use for hunting anything. When I go hunting I want a gun that will hit pretty darn close to point of aim not 6" to a foot or more away from it.

IF (GREAT BIG IF) yours shoots to point of aim with a decent bullet then by all means it will do fine for hunting. Forget the light bullets, they don't lower pressure anyway the powder charge determines that. Use a good 250-270 grain bullet at the velocity the gun requires and you'll do fine IF it hits to point of aim. A bullet in that weight range moving out at 850-900 fps which should be safely do able is plenty. That's all the folks had back in the wild west to shoot from them and they did right well.

IF you're willing to spend the bucks and if you can find someone with the knowledge they can get your POA and POI to coincide for you once you've determined the load you want to use. I'm seriously considering that with this new Uberti of mine assuming it is accurate enough with a decent load to justify the expense. Or I might luck up and find a load that will hit close enough to POA to work for me this time. My new one is a 7-1/2" barrel all the rest have been 4-3/4" nice to carry but I couldn't hit a bull in the butt with them.

HECK Bill : I was thinking of putting sights form another revolver on it if necessary.. read where the bearcat can have J frame sights added to it and talked to a smith here about that.. just a thought.  My bearcat shoots to point of aim with beer bottle neck accuracy.. at roughly twenty to thirty yards consistently... probably will not spend the money for sights, but we shall see on the Rodeo Long hunter I got.
thanks for the reassurance, i have been worrying about that low power thing and wanting carry ability and light weight, and a real good pointing gun... the small frame  Linebaugh 45 could take care of that problem in itself and I may end up sending this other jewel down the road.. I really like th eclone, though it feels just right and is light and it is said my those that have them it is one ragged hole accurate, expecailly worked over by Finch and tightened up a bit and the trigger worked.. if your uberti does not work for you let me know, this may shoot really well but not be necessary for me to keep..
