OT Must have for the shooter's library
« on: May 25, 2007, 01:40:35 PM »
In a recent thread there was some intimation that some of us are lazy and not willing to research for themselves. Another poster said he had no idea where to start. I thought it might be fun for us to compile a list of must haves.
I'll start with  all  the major reloading manuals, Cartridges of the World, Ken Water's Pet Loads and P.O Ackley's Handbook for Shooters and Reloaders.
  Any other must haves?

My latest was the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook. One that deserves mention is McPherson's "Accurizing the Factory Rifle".

i think that this site, GBO, and those below, ought to be studied and things printed from them:

www.findarticles.comwww.leverguns.comwww.6mmbr.com/index.htmlwww.long-range.comwww.nationalmatch.us ; www.sixguns.com ; and some others.

i'd recommend reading all of the Gun Digest books/articles that can be found, buying them oftentimes at a gun show at a reduced price, that are relevant to the shooting or hunting that one does.

i spend more time on this site than anywhere else re: this hobby because it is informative and is a way to also help others.   (at least i hope i am helping, since i have been helped).

just some ideas to run up the flagpole,

I've a Lever action tuned by Mic and bought his above mentioned book.
Already have done a few things to both my handi's. Trigger job and o-ring, and I'm currently rounding up the other materials for the larger projects.
As far as any mention of research goes. This is a modern research site, same as any book or magazine. If you don't want to share your knowledge then simply don't answer.
We all started with knowing nothing.
I've seen many times someone who has not shot for years and wishes to get back into it, but often has to suffer through the large ego's on the forum he is on to find someone who wants to answer his questions.

Moxgrove and Quick have listed the basics. I might add Jerry Kuhnhausen's shop manuals  -- the S&W manual has been very useful to me.

One in particular comes to mind...The Handloaders Manual of Cartridge Conversions...3rd edition...It gives a ton of information on the subject and is a worthy read...

Being the cheap guy that I am I went to the library.  Some people might turn their noses up....but hey, its free and you can look before you buy.  If it wasn't for the library then I wouldn't have known how good the Lyman #48 manual is <shameless plug for Lyman>

I even used interlibrary loan (ILL) to get the Macpherson book and ABC's of Reloading edited bt Dave Chevalier.

The Lee manual I found to be very informative about the reloading process but it is very disorganized and you wouldn't believe how shameless Richard Lee is about plugging his own products.

Now here is a thread that  I realy like. Most of what I know about guns came from reading. I have more books than I can count. For many years I subscribed to
many   monthly magazins like the Rifleman, The Handloader, Guns and Ammo,
Skeet Shooting, For the last years I only subscripe to PS Shooting dealing in Benchrest shooting and rifle precision.

I have many books on gunsmithing and gun stock making, checkering etc. I have shared with most of what I know in my web site which I maintained for nearly 15years and answered thousands of e-mail requests and still do. So when I do at times get my hackles up it is not because I don't want to share my knowledge
 with others.

However I do very much enjoy reading research by others whether on forums or printed matter or here on GB. Contrary to what some believe I do love my two custom Handi rifles. I did write about the Handi rifles and the poor workmanship
on some in great detail after many my investigative procedures. Was told if I ever had anything good to say about the Handi rifles. But on the other hand  I came up with procedures that would fix the problems.

I wrote this because of remarks that intimated that I don't want share knowledge.

Finally!  An answer for the "hackles".  Thanks Fred, I appreciate your honesty.

End of my post hijack.  My favorite reads have already been mentioned.  There is some great stuff out there, free on the net, or to be had at 10 bucks a year.  The bottom line is JUST KEEP LEARNING if you're curious.

I don't think this was mentioned, but the current Gun Digest(comes out every two weeks) is an ad and article mag. combined. This was formerly the Gun List. I've been taking it for more years than I like to remember. I've found some good info in there. Hunman55
