One magic bullet for 44 mag revolver
« on: May 25, 2007, 04:56:33 PM »
I look at Montanna Bullet Works and I am lost. I would like to buy one cast bullet to hunt deer, hogs, shoot hunters pistol, and shoot to 200 meters on occasion.  I would like to work up a midrange load and a hotter load.

Any suggestions from their list on what bullet to buy?  I assume a 240-260 grain bullet would work fine.  Am I asking too much? I would use Unique for the midrange and AA#9 or 296 for the hotter load.

Thanks,

Craig

sorry but theres no such thing as one majic bullet as every gun likes something else. I start with a 240-260 gas checked bullet in either a swc or lfn design

Why gas checked?

because if your looking for a majic accurate bullet youve got a better chance of finding it in a gas checked design as there usuallly a tad more accurate. Are usually a tad less finiky in load developement and usually more flexible in the velocitys you can use them at and maintain accracy. But dont forget the USUALLY used here.

For me the Lyman 429244 has been that "magic bullet". Of course I cast them myself. Me and my best friend and shooting partner cast them and used them very successfully in metallic silhouette matches all over Alabama and into GA back in our competition days. We've used them for hunting as well. Never felt a need for anything else really.

I recall one day Billy decided he wanted to shoot a group back when we were competing with iron sighted 14" TCs. He shot free handed at 50 meters at the same target for a full 50 rounds. I'd say the max outside spread couldn't have exceeded 4" and that was just a few fliers where he'd made bad shots. At least 40+ bullets landed in about a 2.5" diameter hole and that was free hand at 50 meters.

I guess if i had to pick one midrange 44 bullet to recomend it would be the 240 swcgc rcbs bullet. Its probably been the most consistantly accurate 44 bullet in all of the 44s both rifle and handgun that ive owned but even it doesnt do well in a few guns but its the exceptional gun that wont shoot it well.

Thanks for the info.  I have reloaded and shot quite a bit, but I was never serious about the long range accuracy.  I shot a lot of speed plates, IPSC, Sportsman's Team challenge, and 3 gun matches. I have a couple of friends who reload commercially and shot the same competitions that I did.  I always just followed their recommendations for loads and those loads did what I needed.  I am now trying to take it to another level with the long range revolver requirements.

#429421 works for me. Ole Uncle Elmer seems to have had it figgered out! Loaded from 700 to 1400 fps, they always work great in my revolvers. And yeah, #429215 is right on up there too if you want a gascheck design. (If memory serves me correctly this time. Thinking about the 215gr. GC one.)

Montana Bulletworks is about to start casting a 44 Mag LBT  250  Long Flat Nose - Gas Checked.  I think this is where I will start.  Should be a good all around thumper from what I have been reading.  I just bought 4 different .357 swcs, all plain based, including a gas checked for my .357s.  That should give me something to play with while I am waiting for them.
