There is not much to be gained in a 223AI.  Fire forming is a cost no matter how you do it. And brass may not last any longer either in a Handi. If you want more velocity than a 223 go for a bigger case.

The 223 is a fine cartridge as is,

Yep, agree 100%. I suggest the 22-250 (in a bolt).

+1 to what was said above.
I've never understood the AI "thing" if I want more then a 223 or 30-30 I'll buy a 22-250 or 308.
But then again I've built or bought firearms just to be different.

Yes, nothings free. A dear friend gave me every thing I need to shoot 223's for many years to come. But can you get 3800 fps with 27.0 grains of powder?

Sure, shooting a 40gr bullet in a 24" barrelled .223 Remington!! The Nosler 5th shows a max load of 28gr Benchmark with the 40gr BT or BST at 3860fps, whether your rifle can do that is another matter. They show other loads that do it too, 23.5gr N120 @3810, 25.5gr AA2015BR @3796, and 27gr N133 @3812.

Get yourself a current manual or two, and work up the load, be sure to read first, shoot later!! Read the sticky in the Handloading forum, it has good advice for new handloaders. ;)

Thanks for the heads up. I have three current loading manuals. I have found little or no information on 223 Ackley Improved loading suggestions. Using 50gn. bullets I achieved 3800 fps loads In trying to find a load that worked I work up loads in 1/10 grain  increments till I start seeing seeing signs of pressure  . There was little signs of pressure at that point. According to what info I've read, you can  safely load 223 Ackley's to 60,000 psi. Load's I'm using now are in the 3600 fps range according to bullet  manufacturer's recommendations. My original point was I wanted a little more from the 223 without going to a 22-250 which is a fine round and not using up to 40grains of powder. If you know where I can get loading information for 223 Ackley Improved, I'm all ears. Back in the 60's and 70's when I resided in Upstate New York and shot alot of woodchucks with the help of some knowledgeable  people I worked some good loads for my 333 OKH and my 270 Gibbs and some other odd ball calibers. As we know back then there was even less information available.  But the guide lines are still about the same.
