another new guy with questions
« on: May 28, 2007, 04:27:45 AM »
hello all, i just purchased an H&R BC in 45-70 GOVT. i am mainly a handgun shooter and reloader who shoots a lot of lead.
for the time being i am using store bought ammo until i get the feel of the gun but intend to go the reloading route shortly.
i use a few strands from a pure copper scouring pad to remove lead build up in my pistols.
my question is : is this ok for the BC ?
thanks for any replies

Sorry I don't have an answer for you Jake but would like to say welcome to the GBO forums.  Be sure to brows around and do check out the FAQ section of the Centerfire Rifle forum.

Welcome aboard, Jake!! I've shot a ton of cast bullets in my 45-120 BC, have never had any leading to deal with using bullets that were properly sized. When I first shot it, I tried some T7 with 500gr unchecked .458" bullets and got severe leading,  used WipeOut for one overnight and the lead came out in flakes with no problem at all.  ;)

thanks for the welcomes and replies....they are appreciated.
i do need to slug my barrel before i start shooting reloads.
i have used the pure copper strands in all of my auto loading pistols but the rifling in those barrels is monsterous compared to that in the BC. I have also used it in my marlin 336 with no problems.
Tim, what is Wipeout and who sells it.
thanks jake

Sportsman's Warehouse sells it, and there are many online sources. It says on the can that it won't remove lead, but it breaks down the alloys in lead, making the lead easy to remove. Lewis lead remover works too, but Wipeout works with no effort, just foam the bore and leave it in overnight, wipe the bore out with patches and the lead comes right out. ;)
