Grim Reaper-Black Gold Attractent
« on: May 29, 2007, 07:33:31 AM »
Has anyone used the Grim Reaper or Black Gold  attractant? I have heard you apply these scents to trees to help establish a sent marker or rub tree for hogs.  I have also heard that you can use creosote poles such as telephone poles and someone told me that diesel is another product to use.  Have any of you used any of these?  I have put out mineral blocks before and the hogs would nibble on them but when I poured syrup on the mineral blocks, I noticed that the hogs would rub all over the blocks and they would actually take big bites on the mineral block. I have actually got pictures of a hog carrying a mineral block in his mouth after I had poured a syrup and jello mix on the block.

Texasboars.com is the place where those in the know hang out. There are some good threads. Look in the hunting forum. I started one and was impressed with the info. Those fellas swear buy the stuff

The owner sent me a quart of that black gold. I tried it out spareingly on a 5 day hunt with no action. But I was not finding the proper places to use it, ie; rubs near trails.

The stuff has an odd smell. Not bad, not good, just "weird"...would like to know what they put in that.

I read on Texas Boar about the Grim Reaper. I noticed that they also sell the stuff. I will probably purchase some from them but I was wondering if anybody had a home remedy.  Did the Black Gold  smell similar to licorice ?   I used to make plastic baits and I used anise oil. I smells like the old black licorice candy or those balck jelly beans.

Yeah, it smells kinda like licorice in a way. Black Gold runs about $50 per gallon (4 quarts) Not a slam, but I do wonder why it is so spendy. As we all know, even gas is only $3.50.

I'd like to try the "In heat" scent they have out, but at $36 for a beer can sized serving of the stuff, I'll pass. That works out to $360 per gallon. Krazy.....

The price is why I am trying to make something that will work. I have noticed on the Texas Boar Hunter that they say don't buy the expensive attractants such as Hog Wild because as they say " you are  paying to much and you can make it yourself for penny's"  But then they turn around and sell their stuff and like you say its pricey.  I will try to make up some type of rub scent and what I will do is put a camera on it and watch to see if the hogs go to it. What I don't want to do is make something that will scare them off.   I did buy some of their "In Heat" scent and I have not used it yet.  I started putting 2 boxes ( $0.75 )  of jello in my corn feeders and I believe that helped but where I really noticed a difference is when I started putting roasted soybeans mixed with corn in my feeders.  I was standing by my feeder a couple of days ago when it went off. I had about 12 hogs come out of nowhere, I had to climb up my feeder.
