Got my New handi in 45-70 but I need some help !
« on: May 29, 2007, 07:51:36 AM »
After 3 weeks I picked it up Sat. with a Weaver # 82 base and new Bushnell 1.5x4.5 scope. Figured I put it togather aND GO SHOOT. wRONG ! Hever are some things I run into:

1.When I held it in my natural shooting position the forendis short and the stud is in the palm of my hand.Is the a way to lengthen the forend on the synthetic. I can do it if I could find a piece of material to put in ?
    2. I couldn't see the front sight blade in the rear sight too dark
3.I attached the base(it only had two slots) put my high rings on and the scope wouldn't clear the hammer.
made a trip back to the store and bought super high rings.
4 Put scope on and could,t get my face forward enough to see a full pict. in the scope bell. checked out
the base and cut another slot to move the scope back still no luck. I noticed the bases in H@R book had
more slots ( ordered a new base this morning
Butt stock is a little long for me 14 1/4 I need a 13 3/4  Can the synthetic stock be sut and the pad reattached ?
5 I'm a little concerned about shooting the  rifle due to it's weight(I'm shooting factory 300 grn) I once had a Marlin 95 that beat me up pretty bad but I had some hot loaded 405 grn bullets in it)

Could any of you give me some advise on how to overcome the things I mentioned ? Sure could use your help I don't wan't to put more money in. I'm only going to sxight it in and shoot it once on a hunt in MS.
Almost forgot. the comb is too low for me to see through the scope comfortably.

1. You should be able to remount a sling stud with a nut on it a little farther forward, the forend is hollow, but mine are already just 1½" from the front end, that should be plenty of room.

2.  Can you see the rear sight over the scope rail? I can't unless the rear sight is all the way to the top of its travel.

3 &4. The FAQs has the skinny on the Weaver 82, it's a poor mounting choice. With a little trimming of the hammer spur, you can use medium rings.

5. Fill the stock with shot, either poured in, or in a sock, to add weight. If you shorten the stock, the recoil pad won't fit anymore since the stock profile is tapered, the shorter it is, the smaller the butt, the pad will be too big. I'd get a youth syn stock for it.

Thank you Tim, that is the same scope and rings I wanted to put on mine. The front sight is no Issue, except if the scope went bad. What I was thinking is if I shorten the stock  can the pad be reattached, I can always grind it down to fit. Appreciate the picture. On a side note I was looking at your quote are you sure it was Mark Twain ? Seems I remember Harry Truman saying that or mabey he was Quoting Twain. Let me know if I'm wrong. I'm an old history teacher and I don't remember like I used to.
Again I want to thank you for all your help and responses to my questions. I'm a rookie at this handi game.

When you cut the stock off, you'll cut the mounting holes off, you'll need to epoxy something inside the stock to mount to since it's hollow and modify the pad since it fits inside the stock. I would think ordering a syn youth stock from H&R would be easier, if it's too short, add a Limbsaver slip on to get the 13¾" LOP.

You might find one in the classifieds too!! The youth stock is $32.50 from H&R, Choate wants $35.

Also, consider that when you put the H&R rail on, the scope can be moved about an inch to the rear, that will make a difference too.

You might also consider using a wood stock and cutting it down and putting a good limbsaver recoil pad on it, paint the stock with bedliner to match the forend. See the current topic on that.

Mark Twain said it. ;)

Sorry, I haven't got to shoot it yet. I'm waiting on a scope base from H&R before I can put it togather. Do you think I could use High rings instead of the extra high which I got ? I'm got the Bushnell 1.5x4.5 that you recommended. Once I see if I can tolerate the recoil and it is accurate enough for 150 yrd deer shooting I will strart fiddling around to make it fit me better. Thanks for all your help.  H@R said they mailed my base on May 30 so it should be here any time. Oh one more question. Do yopu use anything on the base screws to make them hold better ?

Blue or purple loctite, or some of your wife's fingernail polish will work fine on the base screws, don't use red loctite or you'll regret it if you ever want to remove the screws!! :-\

Depends on the ring height, not all highs are the same height, Burris Signature Zee Highs are .420" tall from the top of the rail to the bottom of the scope tube and they will work with about 1/16"-1/8" clearance at the hammer if that helps.

Please read "Bedding the Scope Rail" in the FAQs under Accurizing too. ;)

I shortened my synthetic stock 3/4". Tim's right in that you remove some of the screw hole material, but if I recall I just used a shorter screw for the bottom and maybe drilled the holes deeper. Of course, you'll need to remove some material from the inside portion of the pad to get it to fit, and then reshape the outside to match the smaller stock. But it's doable.

Thanks guys, I'm getting a little impatient with H@R. I ordered my base and it was supposed to be mailed May 30. I called today and they said wait untill next week if I don't get it they will reship. Darn it I'm tired of waiting.

It wasn't shipped to a PO Box was it?? I hate ta tell ya this, but I ordered 3 rails last year, they said they'd ship em right out by UPS, never got it a week+ later, called em again, same story, ultimately I got em about a month from when I ordered em, dunno if the problem was in shipping, but I suspect it may have been.  They told me they'd ship by UPS, so I gave em my street address, then they shipped it by mail to the street address twice which doesn't get delivered by the USPS, that's why I have a PO Box.

Anyway, it was frustrating, they told me it would be shipped one way, they shipped it by mail twice instead of UPS like they said they would. >:(

When I talked with them they said they mailed it on May 30 but nothing has showed up yet ! I don't remember the guys name but he told me how to shorten the stock on the synthetic handi and I think I can do it, Noe I just have to find a saw and figure out how to hold it level while I cut.  You have been a great help to me and don't have the words to say how much I appreciate it. Well, hang in there, you'll get er whipped soon, I'm sure. ;) You could make yourself a mitre box with a of 2x6, build a 3 sided box with a piece of it to set the thickness, then make a partial cut down thru it to the bottom piece to act as a guide, lay the stock in the box upside down, then make your cut, that should help. You might have to shim the wrist end to get the cut the right angle.

I marked the cut line by wrapping 3/4'" wide masking tape around the stock, with one edge of the tape even with the end of the stock and then I cut along the other edge of the tape to remove 3/4". I held it in a padded bench vise and cut it with a fine toothed hand saw, going slow to make sure the cut was going where I wanted using the tape on both sides of the stock for a guide. If you want to just remove 1/2", do something similar with some 1/2"" wide tape. The plastic cuts easier than wood, and it's not hard to do if you're good with a saw.

I've cut several for my wife using the masking tape. I put tape on after removing butt pad.find something that is as thick as you want to shorten the stock. Have someway of holding the stock upright with the butt end flat. Take the spacer you have and mark a line on the tape to mark your cutline. I use a hacksaw to cut the synthetic ones working along the cutline all a way around. You can keep it square by doing the cut this way. Take a file after cutting and fine tune it. I have found most synthetic stocks have enough meat at the screw holes to get them to youth length. Check your screw length and drill the holes longer.
Hope this helps

That helps a lot guys although I don't have many tools, I think I can do it. I do have a vise and hacksaw and a dremal tool. and a vibrating sander. and a small level.
I called H@R about my base again this morning. They said it should be here by now.  I told them the Indians must have attacked the wagon train they sent it on and I was of waiting . They said would ship another today.
