Paint or spray-on bedliner material?
« on: May 29, 2007, 08:39:53 AM »
My stainless Handi shoots better with a wood forend, but the color doesn't match the black stock. What would be the most durable, black spray paint or that black spray-on bedliner material from Walmart? Anybody use it on wood? I've also thought that maybe you could stain it black and then finish it with Tru-oil. Anybody's comments are welcome! Thanks.

I have used the spray on bed liner to match wood to synthetic. But was still a little glossy. So I used 3 coats of the bed liner to 1 coat of semi matte black Krylon. Looked great and held up good too.
Also the semi matte black Krylon looks good on barrels as well. With a few coats on a clean preped barrel it can make for a tough and easy finish.
Just my 2 cents worth. Give it a try, if you don't like it you can always remove it. Handis always seem to have plenty of wood to work with.

No I sure don't. I tried it first on an extra wooden forearm for a little practice. Turned out fine, then I did an entire stock. It works pretty good, though you will still get some nicks with use, and wood will eventually show later due to them, but they are easy enough to cover back up. It's rather grippy too.

I have seen some of Aaron's (myarmor) stuff. It really looks good.  You might want to try it.

The Duplicolor sprayon bedliner at Wal-Mart is tough.  Like Aaron says it has a really good texture to it also.  I painted a Savage 200 with it and it is easy to grip in the rain.  Much easier than finished wood or the typical synthetic surface.

Thanks all, that bedliner stuff looks pretty good. I think I'll give it a try.

Anyone use duracoat? Looks like great stuff, but I've never used it.

If you are going to try the Duracoat then you might want to get a cheap HVLP gun.  I looked at it for a long while.  Some other websites had opinions that the kit that Lauer sells with the aerosol can of propellant wasn't worth the money.  The consensus was that you should buy a small bottle and use an HVLP gun and a compressor.

I backburnered using Duracoat, but still want to try it.  Granted, I never used the aerosol, but I just figured to let you know what I found.

I had first read about it in a magazine, and the guy used like three cans before he got the application he wanted, so yeah I can understand that part. I always figured I could crank down the pressure regulator on my compressor and just hook it up with an adapter. I'm just wondering if it's as durable as they claim.

bluebayou, that savage 200 you did turned out nice!I put a kevlar graphite layered stock from I think six enterprize or something like that, its been 20 years or more lol.I put it on a remington 600 and it came unfinshed do some filling and sanding on it and a coat of paint. Now that I saw how well that savage looks,I'm going to redo my stock and give Wal Marts spray on bedliner a try !Thanks for the idea. ;)

I wasn't the first, but I am glad that it helped you out.

The cheap synthetic stock on the Stevens 200 needed some drawknifing to remove the flash lines.  I also used fine (maybe 300-400 grit) sandpaper to knockdown the molding lines around the fake checkering.  The paint itself will stick to anything.  For $8 I am very happy with the durability and the grip.  Going to spray the new 22 rifle with it too.

I used black spay bedliner on a handi 20g youth. It kicks around in totes and stuff and seems to be fine. I didn't give it any prep except to wash the wood with alcohol to degrease it.
