Reduced loads for .243
« on: May 29, 2007, 09:30:42 AM »
I've read about light loads in .223 using Blue dot on Mr. Calhoon's site and the 'Universal .30 caliber load" using Unique on Rocky Raab's website.  I'm wondering if anyone knows if there is similar reduced load data for the .243.  I've thought about getting a .243 but I would want to plink with it affordably.  I've found loads for the .223 and 30-30 that wouldn't cost any more than it costs to buy some .22 ammo.

Can you help a guy out?

The speer manual has several using IMR 4198. For 85 and 90 grain 17-19 grains. For 100 grain 18-20.
Hope this helps, TVC15

I have had some desent results using H4895 in reduced loads , Per Hodgdon , you can reduce by as much as 60% which works out to 16 grains on a 40 grain load , so you basicly use 1/2 the powder that you would normaly use .

... or 10 grains of Unique, with .243, and/or 6mm Remington.

scroll down to the .243/6mm Remington data:

Don't know if GBO will allow this posting but if you look up a Seafire B17G on Accurate Reloading forum, he has gobs of data on low powered reloads.
I have used many of his formulas and have been VERY pleased.
He uses mainly BlueDot as a propellant and tests out his data.
He will promptly reply if you PM him.
Hope it helps.

You might consider the use of a ballistic filler like Pufflon. I've used Hodgdon loads of H4895 in my 45-120, it's extremely sensitive to position, from shooting very accurate with the powder all the way to the rear, to hangfires with it forward!  :-X I haven't tried the Pufflon yet, but it's on my list. ;)

azmark:  Another powder to seriously consider for reduced .243 loads is IMR's SR4759 - even Mr. Blue Dot, as Seafire B17G became known over on the Accurate Reloading forum, was impressed with SR4759's performance.  I have had very good results using 23.0 grains behind 80 grain bullets - much better results than what I ever got with IMR's 4198 or Hodgdon's H4895.
Thanks, Dad, for taking me into the great outdoors.
