would you shoot it
« on: May 29, 2007, 07:11:10 PM »
would you shoot a ruger 1 45 70 gold inlayed 50th anniversary model if you got it unfired, but with some degrading of a couple spots of the inlay ? no box no papers, etc.
I was planning on shooting it ... always wanted a 45 70 #1
How does the 50th anniversary compare to the most recent blue or SS Number ones coming off the line.
I know the triggers and barrels were rumored to be better in the original ones than the recent ones , at least by some.. have not shot it but that is hard to continue to do.

thks.

Cause if I really should not shoot it due to it getting really valuable one day, then I cannot keep it... but if it happens to be better than the new ones.. different results could follow.

I won't own a gun I can't shoot.  Commemoratives have no special place in my heart.

So I'd shoot it or sell it.

Give me a box of shells and a half a hour and it will not be new / nor will it be never fired!

The only person that it has to please is me!

If I buy a gun, there is no one that is going to tell me that I cannot shoot it.

A gun is nothing more than a tool. and a tool has no use unless you can use it.

It would be like buying a hammer and then never taking it out of the box.

The only way it would remain unfired with me is if it was worth more than a new one cost so I could sell it and buy the new one with cash left over.Otherwise its got one going down the tube.I'd have someone that knows guns check it out and see what its worth then deciide. But since its what you always wanted hey have at it and enjoy !

A guy found a colt SAA in a wall somewhere in the west , it was shot to --- and all rusted up , sold for over a million !
of course it was ser. # 1 , but shooting it didn't hurt the value ! besides what good is a pretty gun if ya can't shoot it , like a pretty wife that can't well cook !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Maybe try selling ti and get enough to buy a reg #1S in the same chambering.  Without the box it's gonna be of less interest though and won't command the same had it been a complete pkg.
I have a reg #1S in 45-70 and it's defiantely a blast to shoot (pun intended)  Proberly my favorite rifle and defiantely my favorite #1 (own 3).  Open sight 100yrd shots aren't really an issue within reason. It's not likely to get optics.   Only one i can really see enjoying more is the #1H in .405 that should be here in july hopefully.

I won't own a truck I can't drive or a gun I can't shoot.  Those are two rules I live by and if I ever get one or the other that is too valuable to use I will curse it and sell it for the first reasonable offer, period!

right on with what you all are saying : I do not keep them if I do not shoot them much less cannot shoot them. I would sell it or trade it if it was worth maintaining  to someone else, but would need a nice 45 70 #1  for it..

but :  I would not want a new one if the older ones are better..and if this one is made like the older ones were..

have heard that the red pad versus the black pad models : the original barrels were reputed to be shilen and the triggers : jewell and the wood marvelous..the second generation the pad color changed, accoring to some reading.

this one has nice wood, but was wondering if it had any -shooting- advantages due to the materials used.  I will have to look further into it my self on some ruger forums of other origin, .. if my resident experts cannot  advise on those aspects.. :o
any other help is appreciated as are the responses so far...
i will shoot it and soon, if I am not moved to let someone else preserve it while I get a shooter... but I doubt there will be much interest in that.. it would be easier if it was asserted that this one would most likely be a shooter even moreso than the new production ones.  then I would taike it out saturday...

Without the original box and paperwork, the collector value falls dramatically. What you've got is a really nice Ruger that will draw attention and comments at the range. Shoot it and enjoy it!
