'03 Springfield NRA sporter
« on: May 30, 2007, 03:59:07 AM »
A friend recently traded into a couple of rifles that have me green with envy. He got a 30/40 Krag carbine and an '03 Springfield NRA sporter, both in near mint condition! He intends to shoot the Krag since that has long been his "dream gun" for a hunting rifle but we are wondering as to the value of the '03. It has the Lyman receiver sight at the rear and a tall blade front on the star gauged barrel. What a beauty! Just looking at it takes one back to the days of Townsend Whelen and Elmer Keith and it's "like new". Does anyone have an idea as to the value of such a rifle? Way out of my price range I'm sure, but any ideas would be appreciated.

According to the Ned Schwing book, Military Firearms, Collectors Price and Reference Guide;  the gun is worth $1,800, $2,200-$2,600 if in good, very or excellent condition.  If he has one of the 589 NRA Sporters with the B stock it is worth $5,500, $6,500, $8,500 if in good, very good or excellent condition.

Thanks Alsaqr, I'm not sure what is meant by "B" stock. This one has a pistol grip sporter style stock with a barrel band on the forend and a rather thick checkered steel buttplate with some curvature or slight crescent shape. The wood stands high of the buttplate all around and has a dull oil finish not at all glossy. I'd call it excellent condition, near new, with no marks or scratches.
