Author Topic: New hunting revolver??? (Read 1995 times)

Last year I hunted with a Taurus Tracker 4" 357 mag. I took one deer with it. I am thinking of getting a 44 Mag this summer for deer season. Does any one have any experience with the Taurus Mod. 444 Ultralite 44 mag. Raging Bull??:confused: I know it is only a 4" 44 mag. but it should fit into my current holsters and stuff.
Also has any one any experience with any of the Taurus 44 mags? I might be talked into the 6" barrel, but I kind of like the way 4" barreled guns handle.

I have a Ruger SBH and my son just got a Tauris model M in stainless with a a 8-3/8" ported barrel and the Tauris is a joy to shoot.That porting really makes a difference. Good luck with a tough decision .

Personally, I wouldn't go with taurus, I have both seen and heard of a lot of quality issues. A used ruger or smith would be a lot better. If you are set on taurus though, just make sure you can check the actual gun carefully before you buy.

I like the taurus, but as pointed out you could possibly get a used smith or ruger for a similar sum..they are usually a better respected choice, but the taurus models I have used were very good and accurate as well.
I got it at a local gunshop t a SBH for about 375 in LNIbox condition it is a 7.5 inch, but others are around as well, and it would cost about 50 bucks to cut it and crown it I think.
I just almost sold a 6" smith SS for 475 alone, or five hundred with two nice leather holsters, galco , I think... one shoulder and one hip holster...
not trying to sell you a six inch gun, just letting you know the holster is a small consideration and can be picked up easily. plus the smith and ruger are american items...
If you like Taurus and want it, get it and use the hell out of it ! May your struggles with this decision add to your enjoyment and end in satisfaction.

If your looking for an inexpensive starting handgun hunting handgun that will serve you for the rest of your life. Pick yourself up a superblackhawk ruger 44 with a 4 5/8s or 5.5 inch barrel. You wont find a better gun for the dollar anywhere. Id bet on the used market you could find one as cheap as a new tarus. There bull strong and very accurate guns. About all they need to be a premium hunting gun is an action job, but what out of the box gun anymore doesnt need that.

I agree totally with Lloyd. I've heard to many people that have had so many problems with Taurus guns. They have improved there quality over the years, but it's still a Taurus. SORRY

forgot to add... I own rugers and smiths, buy them used, and love them best bang for buck in my opinion has always been ruger. ---course I dont now nuthin..

Sorry, I'm one of the formally burned anti-Taurus crowd. Buy American. Smith & Wesson or Ruger in .41, .44, or .45 Colt. Colts are good, too, but not worth the money folks are asking for them now days. My favorite hunting piece is a Ruger .44 Bisley. Got two: one with scope, one without. Also use a 4" Anaconda, and a 4" S&W 57, BUT the Bisley is the favorite.

I've got a Taurus raging bull .41 mag that has been flawless and I have well over 1000 rounds Thur it. Its a great hunter as are the many others mentioned.

JK, while many hunters think the .357 is minimal for hunting,it DOES work. Consider where you MIGHT be hunting some years in the future! Many states have barrel length restrictions AND minimum caliber limits. I hunt with single shots USUALLY ,but my 44RSB gets a turn now and then. I am getting to the age where recoil becomes a problem. I have little experience with Taurus,but lots more with the Rugers. I'd suggest the Ruger in a 6" barrel. OH ,congrats on your .357 deer!

Old Griz, how does the felt recoil compare between the Bisley and the other two? Does the Bisley frame make things feel better? Sorry I have absolutely no experience with them.

I got a bisley hunter 44 last week
with the same load it's MUCH more pleasant to shoot than a redhawk with a 6" barrel

it's got a bit more bark than my 41 mag (smith 657 7.5" barrel) but not that much (with similiar loads (240g at 1200 FPS) )

they make a 5.5 inch redhawk. Only one cataloged anymore though is the 44mag.

And another things about the Taurus ultralite, it is the same size frame as the raging bull series, but believe me, it is not made to the same quality as the raging bull series is.

If you want to get the actual steel raging bull in .44, then do it by all means, those are very good revolvers, but the ultralite not so much.

The ruger bisley hunter is one nice revolver though.

ever hear of the lovely brand Dan Wesson strong as a Ruger and has interchangeable barrels Mon son and Norwich are the best Palmer is ok. I have a 357mag blued revolver pack from Mon son 2.5,4,6,8" case and a 44mag 10"stainless scoped from Norwich

In the past month, I have bought a 45 Colt, 357, and 41 Mag Ruger Blackhawks. What fun guns, very accurate and reliable, and the price can't be beat!

I guess that was a typo, it is Monson, Mass. I have a 445 Super and a 357 Super both superbly accurate and very strong. IMHO best DA revolvers ever made.
