Get the 223, you have the 308 which is somewhat in the same class as the 30-30, it'll do until you get the 30-30, you don't have a varmint cal yet, that makes the 223 the first choice. ;)

Got to go with Tim on this one , get the 223 in a Bull Barrel , you will love it .  ;D The 30/30s are nice but you DO NEED a ver-ment round in the stable .

a new Gander Mountain store just opened near my house , they sell used guns, and they had a .223 with a bull barrel and cinnamon lams for $195.00 . the gun looked like it had never been fired .i don't even think a scope has ever been mounted on it. if its there Saturday it will be mine.  thanks

Give them a call and ask to have it put it on hold for you.  I've done it before at my local Gander with no problem.   ;)

Yea what everybody said ... except make it 204 Ruger there is no reason to buy a 223 other than cheap ammo and since you already have suitable deer chamberings (the only other possible reason).

If it were me...neither...I'd go for a bull 243 or 25-06...I like the ballistics on them better..and they are true dual purposes rounds...but...if you really have your heart on a 223...then go for it...they are pretty nice. :)

Add another Vote for the 223. It's not only cheap to buy ammo for, but to reload for as well. Tons of supplies available and pretty straightforward. I like the mid range capabilities of the 223. I like it for around 100 to 350+ on varmints. Not that it's not capable of reaching out more but sometimes I feel over powered with my 243 at these distances and the noise is substantially more. Thats a pretty good deal on what sounds to be an Ultra 223.... Have fun
