Sights for a Sharps
« on: May 30, 2007, 01:23:02 PM »
New Pedersoli 45-70, 32 inch. barrel.             How far can I get out to with a three inch staff rear sight?   Do I need the four inch staff for 1000 yards?  Been looking at the sights at Cabela's.  Just don't know which to get.      Help please.

You should be able to reach 1000 yards with the 3 inch staff, depending on the wind.  Only a strong headwind will prevent enough sight elevation.  I have an MVA rear sight with a 4 in. staff and there's quite a bit of staff above the rear aperature at 1000 yard setting.  My MVA is not of the Soule variety and I run out of windage long before I run out of elevation.  Consequently I installed an MVA front sight that is windage adjustable.  While it corrects the problem it adds another element to sighting.

Do you mean the tang sight.  I have that setup on my Pedersoli.  Mine will not get 1000 yards.  Not even close.  You can change the front sight, which will help, but I still doubt if you will reach 1000 yards.  I shoot chunk rock with mine at 425 yards.  I use 3/4 of the sight bar to get 425 yards.

The V-notch rear sight is calibrated for 1000 yards.  But it is not three inches long.  Tom.

gunbuster:  The 3" staff you are talking about is at best a mid-range sight which may get you to 600 yds.   If there is any chance you are ,in the future, going to shoot long range, 800 to 1000 yds., I'd strongly recommend you purchase the long range sight   best regards  Iowa
