4" 44 hunter
« on: May 31, 2007, 07:32:28 AM »
Does anyone have any experience deer hunting with a 4" 44 mag.?  I am considering getting a Taurus ultralite Mod. 444 44 mag.  I currently hunt with a 4" Taurus tracker 357mag. and have had good results.  I am just thinking of going up in the power department.  I like the way the 4" barrels handles.  Any comments good , bad or different is welcome.

I am not a Taurus fan at all. But if it was me, I would either get a S&W or a Ruger. JMHO  ;)

I have the 444 ultralite, but I wouldnt hunt with it.  The lightweight makes heavy loads kick the heck out of your hands.  I wouldnt trust myself to take a good shot with a heavy load over 30 yards with it.  Even that would be pushing it, it really jumps in your hands.  I got it for black bear protection, close quarter type of stuff.

For hunting I would recommend something made out of steel, and that won't give you problems.

If you can make it point straight and still want it there are a few things to watch out for:

Cylinder alignment:  Use a flashlight to see if its aligned, a problem I've seen in a couple.
Hammer spring base:  It will jump out of the seat, and you will have to take the gun apart and reset it.  I finally got mine crammed down hard enough so it wouldn't jump out.
Hammer pin:  The pin which goes through the hammer can stick out one side and rub against the frame, a little sandpaper and steel wool can solve the problem.
Sight alignment:  Mine is still off a bit, might have the get some custom work to realign them, even though they are adjustable.

If you want a small revolver for hunting, I would get a super redhawk 4", or a s&w 629 4"

The 4" barrel is fine, the Taurus is not.  Spend the money for a S&W.  Wore a 4" M29 for many years.  Fine holster gun.

My 4 inch 629 is probably my favorite deer gun. I shoot 250s at about 1000 fps out of it and its killed every deer and pig its been aimed at.

ratgunner, I was thinking the same thought as you??? Are you unhappy with your Taurus? Or do you like it so much you want another?

You may want to look at the Taurus model 44 in 4 inch. It is all steel and ported. Mine has a very good factory trigger. It is the only Taurus that I own and I am happy with it.

I have a 4" Anaconda and a 4" S&W 57. I'd be happy to hunt with either one of them.

Taurus are great for checking out your metal detector and making sure it still works. If ya find your buried Taurus, fine. If ya don't, ya ain't lost nothing.

I have a Python and a Smith 1955 as well as several Ruger handguns. I still like the Tarus 44. It packs easy and so far has been a good shooting handgun. Maby I got lucky with mine.

Ak.Hiker. What's your Smith 1955? Any pics of it?

JKump, the 4" length is definately my choise for a packing pistol.

The Smith 1955 is a model 25 with a 6.5 in barrel. It is a 45 acp or auto rim. It was my first handgun. My Dad got it for me when I was a teen. It is in good shape but is holster worn and the grip has lots of scratches from the years of taking it with me hiking. I got it back in the times when a teen could take a handgun on a hike and no one would think a thing of it.

Check out Rugers new 4" Redhawk.  I couldn't wait for Ruger to put one out.  I had Jack Huntington build me one.  It started out with a 5 inch barrel.  I had the entire gun bead blasted, action job, jeweled hammer trigger, and had a Freedom Arms front site base installed.  It's a sweet packing gun.

The only thing you should feel when shooting insurgents is recoil.

Well one way to solve this is with a Dan Wesson. You can change barrels until you find the length you like. DW's are very strong and accurate.
