Russian Mosin Nagant
« on: May 31, 2007, 12:17:25 PM »
How about $75 for a Russian Mosin Nagant M44 made in 1944 at Izhevsk. Really good bore and stock. The blueing is pretty good but the stock finish is half gone. Can't wait to shoot it!

Do a little research on refinishing the stock. It's simple.  Shellac, properly thinned, applied with 0000 steel wool will cover and also blend in with the unfinished areas.  The new shellac will "melt" the old and when done (3-5 coats), you'll have a properly refinished M44.
I've done this a number of times. A little elbow grease on the first coat really cleans it up and dissolves the old flaking shellac.  Depending on the color now, choose either an amber shellac or clear (I've always used the amber though)

Clean all the metal surfaces once you've taken it fully apart (bolt too) and oil her down well.  I like to clean first with brake cleaner, then just a ton of mineral spirits.  Then a ton of oil, let sit a day or two and wipe up any excess oil.

$75 is a good price. Usually going a little more than that, especially if you have shipped from an online purchase.
 Good find and good shooting!!

Shellac really is the easiest finish to work with..It comes off easy and applies easy...And it is a natural product made by bees!

You could look at the M38's also, they don't come with the bayonet like most M44's, but in my experience the stock comes looking a lot better, and for the same price.

Of course if you do choose to refinish, it doesnt really matter.

Corbanzo, I don't know if you've looked lately, but the M38's are going for 15 to 20% more than the M44's.  Also, most of the M38's I've seen lately have M44 stocks (with the bayo cutout).

At first I was not going to refinish the stock however, since this is not a numbers matching gun I think that I will.  Some of the above ideas sound pretty good.  I hope to shoot it tomorrow.

The 44's are the least desirable of the Mosin's to shoot for me. The Muzzle blast and poor balance w/bayonet detract from a nice carbine. I would get a 91-30 or M38.

I bought a M44 for $112 out the door, so you got a much better deal than I did.  I put a synthetic stock on mine and an adjustable rear sight.  I havn't gotten too serious with testing it for accuracy yet, but it is a really fun gun to take to the range!

I removed the bayo from mine and reset the front sight and shoots great with a little less weight up front without the bayo.
Great little brush gun, once you master the safety, which is very easy once you get it down.
Marginal on deer past 150 yards from what I've seen, although I was using pretty inexpensive soft-point ammo.  I was using a 91/30, but ammo is the same. I got the deer, but not impressed with the effect.  Probably better results with better bullets I'm sure.

I've got mine roughly sighted in.  I have wolf SP ammo, winchester SP ammo, and silver bear SP ammo to shoot for group size.  If any of those rounds impress me, then I'll cut the bayonet off and make it a "beater" hunting rifle.  If none of those rounds group well, then I'll just feed it the cheapest surplus ammo I can find.

I just reserved a Finnish 39 Moisin-Nagant at the local gun shop.  It is a beauty and includes the sling.  How is $130 for a price?  I understand that they are really good shooters.  Does anybody have more information on these?

I don't know alot about the Finns, and there are varieties of those too, but $130 sounds like a pretty good price.

My 13- year old son wants a Mosin Nagant.  He wants to hunt coyotes and maybe deer with it.  He seemed to handle an SKS with no problems, but I'm wondering if the 7.62x54 would kick too hard.  I've never shot that cartridge, so I don't know anything about it.

it will kick harder than the SKS, but it is tolerable. my last trip to the range, i put 75 rounds of albanian light ball down the tube in about an hour's time.  it wasn't really that noticible the next day, even with just the steel buttplate
i'd much rather shoot this than say the same amount of 12ga.
i'd suggest getting a slip-on pad if it won't make it too long for him.
and good ear protection is a MUST with these, they tend to make a little bit of a BOOM! ;D

oh, and as far as the bayonet goes, if it's a problem just take it off and resight the rifle.  it will make a difference in impact, but not as much as folded vs. extended.
I've had pretty good luck with S&B 180gr soft points-and the brass is reloadable

The Finnish M39 is even better than it looked in the gun shop.  It has a 1942 "B" barrel in great condition.  From the square fingers of the stock joint, it is clearly a post-war arsenal rebuild.  It is in excellent condition and was probably not issued after the rebuild.  I didin't get to shoot it this weekend, but hope to soon with Wolf 200 gr.(?) ammo.  Due to my eyesight unless I can equip it with a scope, I won't find out it's accuracy potential.

I saw a beat-up M39 at Gander Mountain for $210, and had another dealer tell me that is about the going price for an issued one in good condition.

Gander Mtn. also has a 91/30 that has been sporterized with a camo after-market stock and new front sight for $169.  I don't think that you could put one together for that price!

the SA mark  indicates it was the property of the Finnish civil guard at one time.  Woodchukker, you got a great deal for $130.
as far as the maker goes, look for a "S" inside of a gear for Sako.  A "T" inside of a upside down triangle is for Tikka, i think.
and i can't remember what the mark for VKT is.  but since you say you have a "B" barrel, it probably won't have any of these.
two really good sites for more info on your M-39 are 7.62x54r.com, and mosinnagant.net
congratulations on your find

At his young age, he could easily develop a flinch.  Depending on the model Mosin it will recoil anywhere between a .308 and .30-06. The 91/30 full length rifle will probably be the least recoiling Mosin.  The carbines can produce a noticeable muzzle blast depending upon which ammo is used and generally more recoil.  If you think your son is ready to handle a .308 or .30-06, then he could probably do well with a Mosin.

If he's determined to use a surplus rifle, the Brit Enfield may be a good alternative.  The .303 cartridge is loaded with 150's and 180's and both recoil noticeably less than either of the above cartridges.  It is also a bit heavier, which reduces recoil as well.  And, the Enfield also lends itself to more conventional scope mounting options.

If the Mosin is the undeniable choice, you may wish to invest in a Limbsaver slip-on recoil pad for the lad, if you can find one that fits the Mosin, and encourage the use of double ear protection (which is not a bad choice for any type of shooting).  Often the sound of a rifles blast will induce a flinch, even if recoil is tolerable.

Good luck with your choice.

If you are looking for a great shooting, low recoil milsurp, get a Swedish Mauser...The 6.5x55 round is excellent and you can get the guns in barrel length 17-24- and 29.

Aardvark -- when was the last time you saw a Swedish Mauser for sale? One of my buddies down in Texas shoots one in any-military-rifle matches, and regularly does well. 6.5x55 does sound like a great round. But I thought all the good Carl Gustafs were long gone.

I've got a Mosin nagant and I doubt it'd be that bad on recoil for a youngster especially if you put a limbsaver recoil pad on it.  Those limbsavers are just great!  I've never seen factory 6.5x55 on the shelves, maybe I've just missed it but I have seen some 7.62x54R on the shelf for $10 per 20 soft points.  Just something else to think about.

I have a 91-59, which I think is the best of the carbines.  Most all of the 38's I've seen have been counterbored some.  Guess it doesn't really hurt them, it's just something to look for.  These little guys do kick.  I have a Lee factory crimp die, I pull down 180gr military rounds and load in 180gr RNSP bullets ment for a British 303, it is cheaper than reloading for it.   Larry
