Hunting the road system for black bear
« on: May 31, 2007, 08:47:35 PM »
I've a few extra days in early sept before a fly out hunt. Wondering where may be a good spot to get out of the rental car and walk in for blackies, if that is even worthwhile (?) Am looking to do this anywhere from Anchorage to Valdez, and/or Anchorage to Seward. Would be doing strictly a glass/spot/stalk type hunt.

Thanks..

In Seward lowell canyon, though you have to hike far enough back to make sure you are out of city limits, or box canyon in the resurrection valley.  Though I wouldn't want to hunt black bears in seward in september, cause they are into the salmon.. yuck.

Once you get to seward or valdez along the coast you are going to see more black bears than on the drive there.

If you want to get out and hike, hunting river systems or high tundra areas will usually produce bears.

I'll keep those tips in mind, 'specialy about more blackies near the coastal areas. I am relatively familiar with the sewart area. Have fished Ptarmagin creek a few times. I wonder if a hike up to Ptarm lake would be worthwile. I do see many trails leading off the road system on my gazetteer. So many possibilities...
