Military surplus rifle competition

Our local gun club is considering a military rifle competition. Maybe a series of paper and or steel targets a ranges from 100-300 yards, maybe timed fire, I am not sure at this time. Does anyone have any experience or recommendations regarding this type of competition. I think it is a brilliant idea with the availability of surplus rifles and ammo. Also many people presently have a number of these rifles in their possession collecting dust, ready to go.

Yeah, make the ones who have the Swedes shoot in their own group or put the German Mausers in with them.  It won't be fair to the others either way.  I have not seen a Swede straight pull that was a bad shooter.  Most of them can match or beat the modern stuff.  1/2 inch to 1inch @100 is very normal for the straight pull if a scope is used along with a steady hand.  I almost hate that ugly rifle because it shoots so darn good.  I wish you the best of luck, sounds fun.

I do believe what 30-30man is referring to is the  SWISS Karabiner Model 31 (K31).  Straight pull, and very accurate.

I know, just giving him a hard time...The Steyr M-95 is also a straight pull and a fine little gun.

My club sponsors lots of matchs including an any sight any rifle match. We shoot this match at 200 yards using the SRC target. 10 shots slow fire prone, 10 shots slow fire sitting, 10 shots slow fire offhand.

I used to shoot Military bolt action benchrest at this club. It was gobs of fun and anyone can shoot from the bench. By the time I moved out of OK it had spread throughout the state.

Start with something simple, say 100 yards benched. Then use all the non rested positions, and vary the range until everybody's had his favorite idea tried.

I once built a ramp that was big enough to hold car tires.  The upper part of the ramp was hinged and held up by a lawnmower blade.  The trick was to knock out the blade and let the tire roll off the ramp.  The tire had a target taped to a piece of cardboard inside it.  At 60 yards, a solid hit from a .22 Long Rifle on the end of the blade would cause it to fall out from under the ramp about half the time.  The first shooter had the job of knocking the blade out and starting the tire rolling. When the tire was released, the second shooter had until the tire fell over to put as many shots in the target as possible. The shooters were lined up with the man with the .22 on the left.  Getting peppered with brass out of a .22 semiauto did not help concentration one bit.  It also took a cool head to wait while the guy next to you was blazing away.  If you want to be really mean and authentic, have the left hand shooter use a .45. I once was in a timed shoot with a retired deputy on my left and he fired off about a case of ammo in the minute we had to shoot.  What fun!
