243 Factory ammo.
« on: June 02, 2007, 01:58:42 PM »
I just received my 243  24'' bull barrel. It locked up perfect on the first receiver I tried. I can't wait to shoot it. I would like to shoot factory ammo with light bullets about 55 grains for varmints and such. The person I bought the barrel from said it likes the 100 grain Federals. Has anyone shot light bullets out of theirs and if so how did they shoot? what other factory ammo are any of you shooting with secusse?

Wow that is some good shooting. I hope to get into reloading some time this summer. But for now I have to rely on factory ammo.

Hey there dale, when i first got my rifle i was getting almost shotgun like patterning then after i shot about 65 -70 rounds through it im now gettin 3 shot groups roughly measuring 3/4  of an inch at 100 with the 75 grain v-maxes and about a an inch with the remingtons now these measurements are not exact  because ive never really measured the groups im just goin by eye,  these are also center to center observations, im sure after more shots go down the tube they'll prolly tighten up a little.

1 more vote for the 75 grain v max. I hand load and shoot .75 @ 100 no problem. With somebody else pulling the trigger it would do better.  TVC15

Don't know if this helps. I have reloaded for the .243 for 40 yrs. BUT, I don't shoot as much any more and I just buy a few Plain jane factory loads at Wally world. Most shoot just as good as my handloads. I shot it a week a go. 80, bullets cut a 3 shot ragged hole at 100 yds and 100 grn for deer went 3/8" with Remington brand loads. I chronographed them and was supprised 2950 for the 100's and 3350 for the 80's.
You can't help but want to reload for a .245, my all around load was an .85 grn at a little over 3200 and my deer load would crack 3000 . I have a 22"bbl.  The best barmit load I ever used was a .75 grn hollow point at 3370. There wasn't a ground hog too far away to shoot at and reguardless what the guys say about .22 centerfires. The .243 will out do them anyday of the week especially if there is a little wind.
I hunted P dogs once with my .243 a light sporter, and it out shot any thing at the pasture including the mighty .220 swift at the end of the day I had more hits per shot than anyone else !

I'm with Country boy, took me a while with different reloads, to best the accuracy I got from Remington 80gr factory loads. Bought them over the counter at Big 5. They shoot into a inch at 100yds from my 20in bbl. :)
