Malorganite?
« on: June 03, 2007, 01:36:27 AM »
I ran into an ex neighbor yesterday and we were catching up on our hunting stories. He said that he is selling a product called"malorganite" that you spread on a food plot in its early growth stages, to keep the deer out of it. It's made from human waste(yuck) and depending on rain it will work from 14-28 days. Anyone ever heard of this?

Yup, don't think that's the correct spelling tho but close enough. I think it's from the city of Milwaukee and is just the city's sewage processed as fertilizer kinda like cow or horse manure. Don't think I'd want it anywhere near eatable crops personally as humans have all sorts of nasty diseases cattle and horses don't and that we can get. But it has been around for quite a number of years and doesn't seem to be going away.

Not to make anyone sick but...... I know some farmers who pump their septic tanks and spread it in the same fields they grow corn and beans in.  Not sure if it is illegal or if that is the way all septics are taken care of.

http://www.milorganite.com/about/history.cfm - read about it here.

Has been used in some places quite well for keeping deer off of germinating food plots and giving young plants a chance to grow.  Does smell like human waste, is fertilizer in its own right, and has been through the waste treatment process, but that is no guarrantee of "purity" and freedom from pathogens.

You can Search this forum and others for many posts regarding milorganite use and its suppression of deer in food plots.  However, if your area carries an abundance, you're lucky, but the fertilizer probably won't keep them out.

Most Small City Waste treatment plants. Get rid of their sludge, By spreading it on local farmers Fields in Ohio.  The sludge is Treated and brought up to a High Temp to Kill any living thing in it.  They then spread it and then spread Lime on top of it.. I have worked on the Equipment they use and there is no smell to it really. I think the heating process has something to do with it. Some of the Nicest Hay fields I have ever seen!

In Japan they call it, "Night Soil."  I guess that is why they prefer their sticky rice, it holds better on chop sticks.
