Sight regulation

Is there any rule of thumb for regulating how high the front sight should be in relation to the rear sight on a cannon barrel? I've got a 20" long barrel 1" bore 1/3 scale 6pdr. Napoleon and I'm having a dickens of a time trying to get it on paper. My rear sight is a disc with as pin hole in it on a on a threaded bolt which can be raised or lowered and sits inside the touchhole. The front sight is a pin. Sorry; but, I don't have a camera to take pic's with. Any suggestions?    Thanks much, Mark

My rule of thumb is to move the target close enough not to miss and make adjustments from that.  Once sighted in at close range, you can move the target out farther and make adjustments for the longer range.

     Listen to George here.  He's right on the money.  Mike and I have 1" smoothbores all over the place and even with 1" rifled guns, we still follow this method.  Even with fancy bore sighting lasers, we still move the target in close to 30 yards so we can adjust the sights quickly and easily.  The trajectory brings the bullet very close to the bullseye at 100 yards upon passing through the the line-of-sight for the second  time.

Thank you George, Mike and Tracy for your help. Along with DD's instructions on sighting
along the contours of the barrel I should be able to get in the neighborhood of the ballpark.

Sights could come in handy if i was trying to win the smoothbore competition at 100 yds. 10 holes in the paper for score. I think I'll use the beercan morter until I get the 1" bore figured out. Thanks for your help fellas.

Untill you get some sights use the barrel alignment technique.  First you will be surprised how accurate you will be and second so will everyone else. 

Then later get the sights.  In the mean time you learn how to shoot your gun.

Sounds like a plan. Start with the basics. We go to kindergarten first and graduate with a degree last.
I'll use the barrel sighting method and work up the proper load first and use the sights only after familiarizing myself with the peculiarities of my particular tube.   Hmmmmmm.  Capt. Jack didn't use sights did he?

Subtract the muzzle diameter from the breech diameter then divide by two. You can add a little bit to the height and file it down for zeroing if you'd like.

Cannonsight, thank you kindly. That's the information I was looking for from my original question. I'm going to forgo using sights until after I've learned to shoot without them. Why waste a learning opportunity, eh?
