For Magnum loads do I have to shoot a gas check bullet
« on: June 03, 2007, 02:56:25 PM »
For 44 magnum I was thinking of buy a quantity of Oregon Trail cast bullets. They have a good deal on 500. But no gas checks. They say they're a " Hard cast bullet" Is that good enough? Does any one recommend another brand? ???

The current theory seems to be you'll be OK if you keep the velocity below 1400 fps.  YMMV

"Hard cast" bullets often don't expand to fill the throat /bore of handguns and can cause leading. I have no idea how "hard" Oregon trail bullets are as I cast my own and do not buy them. If you do not cast and need them, give them a try. What do you need the hard bullets for?

What do I need Hard cast Bullets for :o That's a good question? Do I need hard cast bullets for 1,200 FPS MV out of 44 Mag? Why would anybody want hard cast bullets ??? I've been shooting Jacked Bullets for life of gun but dang they're getting expensive! Truth of the matter is I'm clueless in California in what kind of cast bullets I need.

ive never used a lazer cast bullet so cant comment on them. I do like a gas checked bullet for speeds over 1200 fps in a handgun. Its not so much a matter of leading as ive pushed plain based bullets faster then that without trouble in a handgun but ive allways had better luck with accuracy with mag loads using gas checks. As to having bullets sof to bump up ive never bought into that theroy. To me its nothing but a bandaid for a out of spec gun. If your throats match your barrel and are aligned properly almost allways a harder bullet will outshoot a softer one at any speed. If it werent the case how would anyone get a jacketed bullet to shoot as last time i looked copper was much harder then any lead
