.225 winchester

What I really wanted to do was try and find a model 70 in 225 but it has become painfully obvious that this is mostly out of my league as far as price have found a few on the net that are very nice and very pricey so I will probly continue my quest for one by searching little gun shops in hopes of the 1 in a million chance of finding one. I have read the other post from you guys on doing the 225 in a handi bbl but they are a little jumbled up and I would like specifics as to just what bbl should be used as I will first have bbl bought and fitted to my frame at factory also who should I contact about having this done and maybe how much I might expect to pay after purchace of bbl thanks .Kurt

Tim that's the post that got me thinking more but when it went to all these different ejectors and such I get very confused but then maybe there is not a simple answear to my ? Is there on specific bbl I should buy cause what I want to do is get bbl straight from factory. Kurt

I'd definitely want a 24" barrel, the hornet would be the only one that comes as a rimmed round, but the conversion for rimless to rimmed is kind of a moot point with all barrels being extractors now, the .30-06 extractor should work fine since both the 225 and 30-06 have .473" rims. You might call H&R to see if you can order a 30-06 extractor, not an ejector, an extractor since they're different. Hopefully they won't ask for a serial number, if they do, you'll have to get a serial number from someone here that has an extractor .30-06, .270, 280 or 25-06. I have an extractor 280 barrel, but not the frame, Ken2222 still has the frame I think. Also, hope they don't say it has to be fitted like for George's 17hmr.

 Tim wouldn't a extractor for a 22-250 , 243 , and a 308 work also?

Yes they would Marv. They all have .473" rims.

I searched for a Ruger#1 in 257 Roberts for several years, when all of a sudden two showed. The first one was bought before I had a chance to buy it.
But I got the second one. So you will find your 225 eventual.

The problem I see converting a Handi, the barrel may not have a dimensional
consistant bore. You may as well take your chance with a 22-250 and be done with it. The 22-250 is a bit over stuffed but is a good performer.

The 223 is in my opinion one of the best all round varmint rifle par non. I had
a 223 24" bull barrel rebored becauce of a poor barrel, to 6mm and
chambered for the 6x47. (222Rem Mag) This an older bench rest caliber
 before the 6ppc and it is a performer with a 1-12" twist and 55gr  bullets.

Fred with this cal would I not be better off then to have an encore bbl made while I wait for the winchester I got 2 223 1 is and encore so it would be less of a head ache than trying to do a handi but for some reason I just don't want a 22-250. But you do agree that a 24" bbl would be best? Kurt

Had a 22-250 when it was called the 22  Varminter. Man that is a long time ago. I agree I would not have another one. Too much fuzz and blast.


Yes by all means go for a 24" barrel in 225 Encore. They make pretty good barrels from what I hear.
