.41 Blackhawk Value

I know I probably don't have enough info, but what is the market value on a used .41 magnum Blackhawk, 4-5/8", adjustable sight. I've seen brand new for $325-$375.  Local gun shop has used unit for $295, has what looks like a white plastic grip set, looks to be in reasonable condition.

Is there something I should look for, such as serial number, particular features, which would make this revolver worth more or less than they're asking?

  If it's a OM (3 screw) it'll command more than a NM.  If it is an OM and it's not a low number it'll bring more still, especially if the box, etc are included.  I'm guessing by the price, it's a NM one.  Either way it's a good price.  The .41 is quite capable in a good hands as a hunting cartridge.

good deal at 300 no matter what variation it is if its in nice shape. its been a few years since i saw a new one for 325 around here!!

You need to get out West a little more often.  I found a .357 Maximum last week for $650, at a shop. Passed it up.
Went to another shop and found two Winchester 1894's, .30-30 and .32 Special. Bought 'em both.
Still think about that Maximum, though.

Todd you made the biggest understatement of your life there. Dont get me wrong i love living here but my heart will allways belong out in whyoming. Not because of gun prices though as when i go out there im allways stopping at gun shops and havent came accross to many deals. Maybe a guy needs to get off of the main roads and out of the tourist towns though.

Spied a used short barreled new model .41 mag today in a local gun shop.  Ported barrel and rubber grips.  It was either $279 or $289.  If it wasn't ported, I'd have bought it.

I just don't understand why people will have a small-bore like a .357 mag ported. Proper technique and regular practice will do more to make one tolerant of recoil than porting will.

Besides, porting looks ugly.

Took a closer look and handle this morning. It's well used, although I don't know about abused.  The cylinder is purple-ish, but the frame is dark. There's a little holster wear at the muzzle end. It's a NM, as you suspected.  White plastic grips with Ruger eagle; the screw tip (not the head) actually sticks out the left side of the grip a solid 1/16".

Question re: Lockup.   With the gun cocked, should I be able to move the cylinder at all?  It is not rattle loose, but I can move it.  Also, gap between cylinder and barrel.  I could see light through the gap, but didn't have gauges to measure it exactly.

Sorry for all the questions.  First question probably should have been, Is there a used revolver buying primer around here somewhere?

Don,

My experience with Ruger SA's is that you will always find some endplay and some shake in the cylinder, new or used. And revolvers have a gap between the cylinder and the barrel- it's called the        "barrel/ cylinder" or B/C gap.
A conversation I had with the esteemed Mr. Bowen convinced me that this is not automatically bad. Tighter tolerances are usually better, downright sloppy is never a good idea. It's a matter of degees.

My Ruger Redhawk 41 mag and my NMBH 4 5/8" 41 mag BOTH have some cylinder movement with the hammer cocked, the NMBH has more. Even my 38spl Police Service Six has a little, even after Ruger repaired a lockup and timing problem, though it shoots superbly!

The only times I have found no discernible movement in a cylinder with the hammer cocked was when I picked up [and put back down] a US Firearms Rodeo 45Colt and a FA model 83 in 454Causull.

In CT I have seen the NMBH  in 41mag ,  6 1/2" new for $389 in the store.  When they show up, the used 41mag NMBH seems to go for around $275.

Thanks all for the input. Once I scrape the money together, I'll buy it if it's still there. Looked at it again today, and its condition is more gently used.
*'holic alert*  They also have a used .357/9mm NMBH convertible, 4 5/8", blue.  $395.

Thanks to all for the advice. I was ready to head down to the local (nearest) shop today to pick up that .41 BH.  But first, I had to run errands and drop in at a few "further away" local gun shops.  Good thing I did.

I found a stainless .41 NMBH Bisley, 5.5" barrel.  $410 out the door.  Please tell me I did good.  If not, don't tell me .

If you're interested in a 357/9mm convertible, 6.5" blue, NEW, for $299, pm me and I'll tell you where to find it.  I saw this at a second shop while chewing on the Bisley purchase and, had I not seen the Bisley first, might have jumped on it, given that I know this is a good price.  Then I would have had to buy two today  .

  You did VERY good!  I try and keep an eye open for these Acusport models and can say the last three of them I've seen in .41 magnum all were on GunBroker and went off in the $600 range.   Yeah you did good.  Just in case by some chance you're not too impressed with it later on, i might know of a suitable home for it.
