45acp Brass Virus-- Name your junky brass here
« on: June 04, 2007, 11:18:36 AM »
With the proliferation of different brass manufacturers from around the world, I find that some brands of brass are very poor for reloading 45ACP cartridges. Please name the ones you've had problems with. Mine are:

Amerc - Requires Herculean effort to resize. I discard them on sight.
S&B - Marginal. Hard to resize. Decided that life is too short for them and now discard them on sight.
Any steel or aluminum cases - Discard on sight. I only use brass.

In the future, I'll probably cull out everything except Federal, Winchester, Star Line, and R-P (Remington).

Questor,

I dunno....maybe I'm a snob when it comes to my brass but here's what I do:

I shoot at my club's weekly steel plate speed shoot. It's just a fun thing and winner gets bragging rights until the next shoot. Now, I load only Starline brass for my 45acp. However, at the end of the day, I will find that when I am done cleaning the brass, I have "picked up" some other brass. Some have a headstamp and some have been around the block so much that the headstamp is gone. So, if it doesn't say "Starline" on the headstamp (you know, if it doesn't have the star...line...star) then I pitch it. Yup! I don't reload it. I don't care how good it looks or what brand it is.

Why? Well, I have found that when and if my gun jams, most of the time it's from "other brass". Now, I'm not sayin that Starline never jams, but what I am sayin is the "other brass" usually has had the snot beatin out of it. It will have a scar here or a chunk from an extractor taken out there that if I didn't turn the brass and catch, my gun will certanily catch.....and usually jam.

So, if I shoot just "my brass" and I know my brass is newer, and kept in good shape, this kind of stuff just has less of a chance of happening.

Can't really recall the specific brands I have problems with but my gag is the shell holder on my presses:  if the brass does not want to slide into the shell holder of won't fit, I know it will fit in the waste basket and that's where it winds up.

I used to use Federal exclusivey, then I used this or that, then I used anything I would find on the range.  Then I got into S&B and have re-used some of those I can't tellya how many times.

If I am shooting for accuracy or load development I will use just one lot of brass.  If I'm goin' for range fodder, anything goes.  Mikey

Don't have the shell holder problem on my progressive, but frequently do on rhe single stage or turret. I dispose of that brass on the spot! I postsize or use the Lee FLCD on all my ammo, so even the AMERC junk works for me. Course I don't mess with aluminum or steel cases either. I have good luck these days with mixed range brass.

I'm gradually coming to the conclusion that your approach is the best one for a match shooter. Eventually I'll have only R-P brass.
