Linebored Cylinder on Super Blackhawk Hunters
« on: June 05, 2007, 12:37:21 PM »
Has anyone ever had or contemplated having custom linebored / re-bored cylinders to 45 Colt on the Hunter Model?  I have heard some builders won't do them because the barrel threads in the receiver are often so crooked on the Hunter models that line-boring does not yield desired accuracy. Any personal experiences would be appreciated.

Lloyd - Dave is actually line-boring a SBH stainless 44 mag cylinder to 45 Colt for my Hunter. I talked to him the other day and told him about my concern. He said he has seen some Blackhawk receivers with crooked threads (not just Hunter receivers which are threaded differently than regular Blackhawks). However, he said he can usually compensate for the crookedness. I am more or less just wondering if anyone on this site has ever had custom cylinder work done on a Hunter model by any of the big name smiths and if so, were crooked receiver threads an issue.

i think that if the work hasn't been done for you yet that you may want to consider something that's probably less than 20% of the cost of line-boring, and that is "taylor throating" which is a relatively simple modification to the barrel of a revolver that adds probably more accuracy on a dollar-for-dollar basis than most anything else you can do.   i think a Belt Mountain Base Pin is my first modification to a Ruger single-action (at least it has been so far), a lighter spring kit from Wolff, and then i'd consider the Taylor Throating.    it is described as part of article on Revolver Accuracy at www.alphaprecisioninc.com/revolver/default.htm   you can still find it by doing a general search of the web just typing in taylor throating.

i ask that you read the article and let us know what you think.

take care,

Ive had 3 guns taylor throated and heres my take on it. It never hurt accuracy. It never drastically helped accuracy. What it did do was make a gun that is finiky in load developement shoot a wider selection of bullets well. A gun that is linebored or blocked into alignment properly (just as good) will usually do better then a taylor throated gun. What taylor throating does is try to compensate for a gun that is slightly out of alignment and that alignment is causing bullet damage. What you end up with is a longer forcing cone that helps to minimize the damage but you still have an out of aligned gun and the bullet still his hitting one side or the other of the the barrel when it goes into the forcing cone. Not that its not a vialble option. If a guy is strapped for money and has an ill shooting gun its worth a try for the small ammount of money it costs but dont expect some of the miricles that are preached about it.
