Buffalo Classic is really neat!
« on: June 06, 2007, 02:45:21 AM »
I'd been thinking I wanted one of these to play with for some time now, and finally found one at the right price at a gun show this weekend. The previous owner had replaced the rear sight with a Willliams Foolproof, so I have good repeatable click adjustments. I loaded up some ammo with the RCBS 300gr. levergun bullet, 55gr. Goex CTG compressed .190, .7cc Cream 'o' wheat, and a Win LR primer. I wanted to have something pretty mild to start with, due to the gun's light weight. Wow, at 100 yards almost all the shots were touching! At 200 on our gong at Zia it was holding groups smaller than my hand, (didn't go out to measure them). And it's just so easy to clean! I wondered if the really big bore (.453 or so) would work, and it seems to be just fine. This is a great fun shooter! I'm going to try it in our cast bullet silhouette match instead of my .260 in a couple of weeks, to see if I can hit many with iron sights and to entertain the other fellows.

What is the model number of that Williams rear sight?

Can we see a photo of the sight on the gun?

Here's one on my 45-120 BC. You can get a knobbed screw to replace the set screw like Bernie did so you don't need a screwdriver to make changes.

The Williams number is 70260, it's available from H&R for $59.95 plus shipping, part number R03193.

Yep, that's the one. Mine looks just like it, minus the 45-120 caliber marking. Ouch!

When I looked at the classic rifle at a local shop, the rifling appeared a bit shallow for anything but very hard bullets and that usually means scrubbing the bore well between shots.  Just wondering about other folks results for black powder shooting.  I have an old H&R 45-70 Shikari from 30 yrs ago.  With smokeless loads it is pretty accurate, but with black powder loads, well,, "it aint much!"   Guess I haven't played with it enough.
