sling swivel mounts
« on: June 06, 2007, 03:31:10 AM »
Well I'm only new here in the sense that I haven't ever posted before. I've been able to get any info I've needed by "reading a little deeper". I must say the wealth of information here is astounding! For a little background. I have an old style contender with wood grips and the following barrels: .22, .223, 30-30, and my .309JdJ should arrive later this week. In the past I've used my 30-30 barrel for deer hunting and will be using the 309JDJ this year (can't wait). I've always used a bandoleer style holster that I have never really liked. I've also tried a traditional style shoulder harness and didn't like it either. With a 14 in. barrel I'm thinking wearing on the hip is out. So this year I was going to give a sling a try. My question is what is the best method of attaching the swivel mounts to the gun? There really isn't alot of wood in the fore end and that concerns me a bit...or does it mount somehow to the mounting screw? Is there a kit that contains the hardware? The leather work portion isn't a problem since I am a leatherworker. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks, Mike

I have bought sling swivels studs from SSK that were made to fit the Pachmyer grips and forearms.  You may be able to get these for your wood grips either from JD or if you know someone who is a machist, they may be able to make you a set.  I have used this system for 16 years without a hitch.

I've taken 52 whitetails with my .309JDJ and it's quite adept for the task.  I hope you enjoy yours as well.

You can also use the Uncle Mikes slings that attach the be butt of the wood or pac grip and the forend of the sling has a band clip that attaches to the barrel. I've been using this and checked if there is any POI change with or without and there is no difference. And it has not marred the barrel where it is attached. I've had this type of sling on my 14" barrel for 20+ years with no ill affects.

You will just need to know the diameter of the barrel and order the correct size clip.

Good shooting.

I use the Uncle Mikes screw and sling swivel for the grip, and add a regular sling swivel to the forend.  On Super 14s I use the swivel screw as the screw that holds on the forend.   I have never tried the barrel band.  When I started with Contenders I was told they changed POI so I stayed away.  I have enough trouble shooting well with a pistol.

Let us know what you choose to use.

Thanks for the replies. I too have seen the barrel bands. I just worry both about my barrels finish and POI. Sounds like your not have any trouble with either HL. Keith I think that I like what you have going on and will look into that.
MS Hitman: 52 whittails!! :o man I was pleased to take my first one with my contender just last season. I hope to have many more in the future though ;D

Make your own to size. Webbing and fasteners from your local army surplus or ladies sewing shop. get a couple cheap backpack pad/antislips works great at the shoulders. I got mine looped over so that my firearm is in the truly "ready" position instead of upside down. I used a piece(2) of antislip rubber, formed it on a piece of cardboard then put it in the oven at 170 deg for a couple of minutes to get the "memory" out of it and they are fitted under the gun like a cradle, thicker is better.

I use the Uncle Mikes swivels.  I drill a hole all the way through the forearm and drill from the backside with a Forstner bit to make a counter bore for a nut.  Then use an Uncle Mikes swivel with a machine screw stud and put a nut on the backside inside the forearm.  The way the swivel is part of the forearm and you do not have to unscrew it to take the forearm off.  I have also had the ones that screw into the wood of the forearm pull out.

Bullseye-
That's exactly what I did! Used the forstner bit and attached the swivel stud though the forearm. It's really sturdy that way. I was worried about the barrel band style since I would like to use the sling to steady my shot if I am lacking a good rest.

Thanks all for the info and ideas.

Mike, I have Uncle Mikes bbl. bands on four of my bbls.. Never had one to slip. Mike your bbl. where you want to have it and call them. Try to get one a tiny bit smaller than your bbl.. It won't work if you have much taper. If you have a "hunter" bbl. it's a piece of cake.  Pat
