Anyone here have a US Firearms Flat Top Target?
« on: June 06, 2007, 08:33:05 AM »
I think I'm getting the fever for a 5 1/2" Flat Top Target in 44 Special.

Anyone?

The sooner you do it, the sooner you'll get finished bragging and the sooner we can begin the loathing.

OK, one more question: 5 1/2" barrel or 7 1/2" barrel?

I had one of their engineers walk me around the factory one afternoon when I flew into Hartford.  Super nice fellow.  Everyone was pretty much on vacation that week so there were no off limit areas.  It was an awesome way to spend a couple of hours.  There was one lady there doing some hand-checkering.  The flat top target is one of my favorites and the other one is the PreWar.  Mike Cumpston let me shoot his last Spring and it flung a craving on me that I just having fixed yet.  GS

What did you like so much about it? I'm mostly interested in it for the accuracy.

If you're just going to look at it a lot and take it to the range on occasion, get the 7.5".  If you're going to order a fine well fitted holster for it and wear it every time you head for the truck, as your should, then the 4.75" is best.  The 5.5" would do in a pinch if your are truly going to USE it.  BOL

I'm going to look at it a lot, but I'm also going to shoot it a bunch and hunt deer and hogs with it. And then I'm going to look at it some more.

This is the one I picked up 4 or 5 months ago off of the internet. It is just how I would have ordered it.

Nice work! What caliber is it? How does it shoot? What's your general impression of it?

thanks,

Like this. I gave this to my father a couple years ago for his birthday. 5.5" 44 Special with one piece grip.

Trigger is so-so and the accuracy isn't but it sure is nice to look at.

I've got a USPFA OmniPotent Flattop Target mfg'd in 1998 with the same sight setup. Either the rear notch is too wide, or the front blade is too narrow. I wonder if anyone makes a thicker front blade. Maybe I should contact USFA. BTW, sweet guns, Boxhead & Broom. jd45

P.S........mine shoots real good, to point of aim in fact, long as I hold 'er steady, even tho she's got a .451 groove barrel & .454 throats in the chambers, due to Uberti parts, I'm told. jd45

Joni, I'm not sure I understand what you're saying about accuracy. Is it accurate or not?

A couple of the chambers throw their shots out of the group. I'd say it's not very accurate.

Joni, I know it's your father's gun, (insert raging green envy here), & he decides what's to be done & what's not, but do you think the cylindersmith might be able to correct the problem with those chambers? Just my 2 cents, jd45

Thanks. I trust your judgement, and I may have just saved myself an expensive mistake.

Sorry if I put a damper on anyones ideas................I had high expectations for the gun and well..............I was let down.
If I were doing it again I'd buy a Freedom Arms 97 5.5" in 44 Special.

No damper at all. I just wanted opinions from people who actually owned them.

thanks again,

I have not shot mine, a 44 Special, yet. It has been parked in Texas while I am here in Alberta. It should arrive at my place in Idaho this week and I will arrive there next week and then it's time to shoot. I measured mine up, bore, throats, cylinder to bore alignment and all is good. It also has zero cylinder end shake and just a very faint side to side movement, about like my FA M97 45 Colt. Given this, I expect it to shoot pretty well, we shall see.
