What range for the 280.
« on: June 07, 2007, 11:37:38 AM »
I just received a 280 barrel. Nice barrel and it locked up tight on the first frame I tried. I have no experience with this round. What do you feel the maximum range would be for White Tail Deer? What factory rounds are you shooting for deer and third how do you like your 280 and how is it shooting?

Max Range? What you can accurately shoot at and humanely kill  8)
Pick up a box of Remington Core-Lokts.....I hear most 280 Handis love them

Plain old 140 gr. Rem Core-locks shoot great out of my new barrel.  As far as maximum range, how far are you comfortable shooting?  Think 270 Win., but with a higher ballistic coefficient.  I love mine.  I'm working up some loads for it on my bench this week.  Here's a pic of a group Mac shot with my barrel when he had it.

I agree
If you go by the 1000# of energy rule out to 500yd.
Much farther than I would shoot hunting.

That 280 can shoot farther than you can. A whitetail is a real small target past 300 yds. Me personally , I limit my shots to 200 yds, unless I have a rock solid rest

Just rechecked
700yd with 140g ballistic tip.
That's only 100 inches low if you sight in at 200yd. :)

In all reality the furthest shot would be about 350 yards and I would not take it unless all thing were optimal. That would mean a steady rest a broad side shot and some trigger time at the range with the new round.

Hornady has a 139 Gr Light Magnum Load that pretty much puts the 280 at  7MM mag velocity.  They shoot good and distance is as good as you are able to hold.

I got a white tail two years ago with my 280 it was about 175 yards away. So I'd say at least that. Lol.

I shot several Mule deer with my 280. The only load I ever shot in it was the 120 grain Sierra Pro-Hunter bullets. Mine shot one and a half inch groups with that load and was plenty out to 250 yards which a few of the deer I took were at. I traded it in but the gun shop still has it and I just might buy it back. I don't know why though I have the 7mm-08 which shoots even better. :-\
shot placement is everything.

Dale, At what distance can you hit a dinner plate sized target near 100% of the time?   That would be your effective range.  The .280 will carry more than enough energy to kill anything on this continent as far out as you can place your shot on target.

Most folks haven't had good luck with the Lite Mags in the Handi's...They tend to give erratic accuracy..and stick in quite a few folks chambers.

Well like I said I have no experience with this round. I will be spending some range time to get used to it as I do with any new round I use. I have a 204 that I can hit a 5 1/2 inch target 8 out of 10 times at 300 yards. If I can achieve that with the 280 I would be happy because the dinner plates we have are about 12 inches round.

Presuming the rifle/load combo worked well for me, I'd shoot a .280 to 400 - 500 yards hunting.  I'd shoot it to 1,000 yards just for fun, but I'm uncomfortable with my reliability hunting big game past ~400 - 500 yards.  That's MY limit, though, not the cartridge's.  Enjoy!
