357 max bullets

Hey guys,

I was wondering if any of you use the 180 gr. ssp bullets made my hornady.  Do they produce more fouling than the standard .357" bullets? (being .358")  What about pressures?  I am trying to get some info before I drop $21.00 for one box of them!

I have used them with some success.  My 357 Maximum shoots better with Hornady 180 HP/XTP's.  The 180 SSPB's can't be seated out far enough to get close to the rifling.  As for fouling they produce no more than a standard .357 bullet.  No pressure issues because I stay within the reloading standards set by Hornady for this bullet. 

I guess the only thing you can do is try them for yourself.  Call Hornady and they will be glad to send you data for the bullet.

I have to agree with using the XTPs from Hornady.  Haven't found anything to beat them for some time.

thanks for the great replies, I to have had great success with the XTP, I was just wondering if the ssp bullets gave any performance advantages being a more "dynamic" bullet.

Although I haven't used the ssp at all, I can attest to the 158 gr. xtp that it performs very well on deer. My last deer, (nov. 2006) was shot with that very bullet, and it performed flawlesly, he ran about 20 yards and piled up.  I hit him in the lungs for a complete pass through.

That's good to know.  I have several box's of those that i will be working up a load for.  I may also try the speer 158 fpsp.

FWIW the Sierra 200 gr. RN bullet was the most accurate in my .357 max. I didn't much care for the Hornady 180 gr. SSP.

I`ve taken 4 deer in the last 3 years with the 158 gn. Hornady XTP`s in a .357 max. They are a great bullet if your only shot them through the chest. Stay away from shoulder bones and don`t try to put one through the rear quarter, the are just to frangible at .357 max. velocities. They really make a mess of a deer lungs.
