.458 socom for hunting
« on: June 08, 2007, 03:38:14 PM »
i am considering buying a 458 socom upper for my stag lower.  i like what i have been seeing on this round for hunting purposes but would like to here some more input on the round.  it seems to me that it may be a semi auto 45-70 with great potentialfor accuracy/hunting.  thanks

I have seen one but I was not interested, but that is not saying it is a bad idea. I did have a 50 Beowulf, it was comparable to the 45-70 also. It would make a great deer, black bear and hog round.

jake - I think if you could get 45-70 capability from a semi-auto you would be in very fine form.  All I have seen of that set-up is pictures, and the pictures of the loaded cartridges with the new plastic tip ammo from Hornaday.  I didn't even get a good handle on the bullet weight but I'm willing to believe that round could possibly even be handloaded with a good hard cast slug with a wide metplat and really be a great woods gun.  Mikey.

correct me if i'm wrong mikey but i think you may be thinking of the new .450 bushmaster.  cor-bon is the only factory offering i have found for the socom.  the ballistics that i have aeen are very close to the 45-70.  i just thought that it would be pretty cool to have 45-70 power in a semi auto with a 10 round mag.  thanks fellas.  any one else?
