Burris vs. Nikon?
« on: May 27, 2003, 06:02:55 AM »
Thanks for all your help.  With all the info you guys have given me and the info on the red dot sights, I have decided to go with a variable scope.  With my research and talking to my local hunting shops and gunsmiths, the choices in my price range would be either a burris or nikon.  What do think?  Any issues and advice on either would be helpful.  Thanks again. :D

Scope questions...........
First, thing I'd look at when trying to decide between those two brands, then when you try to narrow it down between a couple models, is EYE RELIEF!   This is critical with pistol scopes, especially when you crank it up to 7, 9, or 12 power (depending on model)!

I ended up putting a Leupold 2.5X8 power variable on my 6.5 JDJ because it offered longer eye relief.  At $400.+ just for a scope I realize that is a bit pricey for some people, but after seeing the clarity and ease of use on 8 power, I'm very happy with my purchase!!

The newer Burris pistol scopes seem to have a good reputation from what I've heard, so that's what I'd suggest if you can't get the Leupold!

Good luck, Del

I have to agree with del on this, plus the the late evening and deep woods brightness of the Leo 2.5x8 make this a 1st choice. I like the other brands ,but love the Leo  jh

I would say go with the Elite 3200, save yourself 200 bucks and have a very nice scope.  I own A leupold and an Elite and basically I spent too much to by the Leupold name.

Read my post here related to the Burris.

http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=8169

As for the Elite 3200 series that was mentioned, I second that one.  I have a friend with one mounted on his FA 454 that shoots great and he has had no problems with it.  The neat thing about the Elite Series is that the Eye Relief is constant throughout the entire magnification range.  The Leupold is a sure bet of course.  I have a 4x on my Freedom Arms and have no complaints.  I also have one on a Ruger 44 that is exceptional.  I wish you the best of luck if you choose Burris.  There are much better options in my opinion.  GS

I have a Burris 1.5 - 4 variable on my Ruger Blackhawk .41 Mag and have been satisfied with its performance. But I agree with the others who have suggested you check the eye relief first before committing your hard earned dollars on someone else's personal preference. I own a Nikon rifle scope and I'm satisfied with it. The Elite scopes from Bushnell are also excellent. Look before you leap!

Hey PJ sounds like you had a bad experience with Burris. How about letting us in on it? 8)

I have the Elite on my 454 and love it.  For the same price as the Leupold 2x I got a 2-6.  I can't see where I gave anything up going with the Bushnell.   I spent a long time shopping for this and finally found the one I wanted on Ebay. Spent about half the price of a new one.  I could care less that it has a couple scratches because I plan on using it, not putting it on display.  I would have gone with the Burris if one had presented itself, but that was before I saw some of the bad press they have received on this forum.  Seems they may be lacking a little in the cust. service dept.  I would recommend shopping Ebay.   There are a lot of the Leupold 2x and 4x pistol scopes there.

If you are looking for a variable take a look at the T/C Scopes.  Eds had the 2-7 for $195 shipped.  I have a couple of them and they are as bright and clear as my Leopolds and Burris and Nikons.  The other thing I like about the T/C is that even though the eye relief changes when zoomed, it does not get as short as the Burris and is not as critical to get a good view through.

Well, sounds like PJ and I have the same view on Burris and their service.  They are crap.  Fairly expensive for crap.  GS

I bought a 2x7x32 Burris put it on my '06 and liked the FOV it was clear and looked well made.Thought this is the best scope made. Then after about 200 rounds I noticed crap floating around inside the scope.NOT GOOD gave a call to Burris they said "just send it back and we will fix it"OK, I said I sent it back 6 to 7 days latter.I got it back I thought man that was fast service their good.It looked ok so I put it back on my '06 and went to site it in.Hmmmmm thats funny I didn't even have to touch the turent it was dead on just like before! They must make good scopes......BUT WAIT.... WHAT THE HELL THERE'S CRAP IN IT AGAIN...SON OF A BEES WAX.So I went home and called Burris for the 2nd time.Told them that the problem is not fixed....WHY!!!!The guy said,"Well we just didn't want to take it all apart it just looked like some dust or something inside of it.Send it back and we'll look at it again"LOOK AT IT AGAIN NO YOU WILL FIX IT OR GIVE ME A NEW SCOPE YOU S.O.B.I have not got my scope back as of yet.I just cant put any trust in a scope that has failed on me.My Weaver and T/C scopes have yet to let me down and I have had them for years they have gone on many hunting trips and have been on alot of heavy kicker too.

Pretty much the same deal here.  The first time, Zero was not holding.  Very erratic and so I sent it back.  The switched out turrets or something.  Dont remember.  2nd time when you get above 5 (this is also a 2x7) everything Blurs terribly, can't make out images.  Sent it back.  This time, when they sent it back to me, it was actually in worse shape than when I sent it to them.  It appeared to have been dropped on the concrete.  The eyepiece had a big gouge in it and on of the turret covers had a dent in it.  Also, one of the turrets was offset too much (stuck out too far).  So, when you would tighten the cap back down, it would actually contact the adjustment know before tightening all the way which resulted in the scope adjustments turning.  Not good.  The third time that I sent it in was because on of the lenses busted or something.  They sent it back and then I started having the blurry problems again.  4th time was for that and when I got it out of the box, it still is distorted so bad that it cant be used.  Its still in my briefcase right now waiting to go back for #5.  I have spoken with them and their response is that we don't replace scopes.  I wanted it replaced because my dealer was going to refund my money because of how bad their service has been with this one and several others that he has sold.  I mentioned that Leupold would have no problem standing behind their product and was told that if they sold cheap optics like Leupold, they could replace bad ones also.  So, my response was that Leupold was evidently doing something right with thier "cheap scopes" because I have had no problems with thier customer service ever and very few with their products.  They were mainly 15-20 year old scopes that just needed some revamping.  I have since replaced my Burris with another Leupold 4x and have not had any problems.  Don't know what I'm going to do with this paper weight yet.  GS

I guess I've lucked out a little.

I have a Burris 7X on a 300 savage, 5X  on a 375JDJ, 5x on a 44mag, and 3 other burris in 2X7 and 3X12 and yet to have any problem what so ever. Most of these scopes are over 15 years old and still as clear and dead on as the day I first shot with them.

Has there been a change in manufacturing parts or location? I don't know.

BTW, the latest scope I have is a Weaver 2X8 that I put on a 222rem. mag imp. So far it is performing very well.
