Third Model Dragoon
« on: June 10, 2007, 05:31:56 AM »
A Friend gave me this gun. It was imported by CVA. It is a very well made gun. Fit and finish great. I have no idea who made it. Maybe some of you can tell me. The serial number id D89808. It shoots very high. As you can see in the picture. At fifteen yards I was aiming at the bottom edge of the target. At twenty-five yards it is shooting completely over the target. Any help will be appreciated.
I wanted to post pics. but don'tr know how.

Click on additional options, click on browse, click on my documents, click on my pictures, click on open. All C&B revolvers usually shoot way high with the exception of the Remington NMA. Its unfortunate since they would all be excellent for small game hunting today. It was well known back in the day to aim for a mans belt to hit him in the chest and the same would hold true today with the current replicas. With that in mind I think you have the best choice for that particular task as the dragoon pack a hellava wallop.

A lot of us replica shooters install higher front sights on our colts.  I have done it on several of my 1860s but not to my 3rd Dragoon.

I prefer the sight that dovetails to the barrel as I can file it for elavation and drift it for windage.

If you enlarge the photos you can make out the dove tail.

Since Dragoons were "dragoon" revolvers and meant for battle, they were sighted in for battlefield distances. That could be up to 200 yards. They were not conceived as a sporting arm: nevertheless, today they are fun guns and still sighted for battlefield distances.

CVA had ASM ( Armi San Marco early years) and Pietta (recent years)for suppliers I have revolvers from both. I have flip up sights on my 3rd model dragoon and are sighted in at 50, 75, 100 yards. The only answer it seems is to changed sights and file down as stated above. Even ole Sam Colt changed his sights to taller on his personal sidearms I have read and was dovetailed in. Good Luck..
