280
« on: June 10, 2007, 07:40:27 AM »
 Was looking for a little 280 info. Was wanting  to get a 7mm prohunter barrel for encore but then I messed up and held a 7mm in the newCDL SS Fluted. So now I still need to pick a PH barrel. Already have rifles in other various cal. and don't wamt to double up on the 7mag.  I think the 280 will fit nicelly between the 270 and 7mag.

ANYONE, DM

 :-\  If you already have a 270 and a 7 mag;
Why do you fell the need to "fit" something in between them?

Sell the 270 to finance the 280 barrel.  You'll have all the performance of the 270 with a greater variety of bullet weights available.  Plus, you'll have a common bullet diameter to use between 280 and the 7MM Mag rather than buying 277 and 284 bullets.

No disrespect to the 270, its a great cartridge, but the 280 will match it with similar bullet weights and do more with heavier bullets.

I've got a Rem 700 BDL SS with a Krieger #4 barrel in 280.  Most accurate rifle I own.

My 2 cents.

GLC, My ol 270 ruger 77 and me, well we been together fer at least 21years. We both know stuff that would get each other in T-R-O-U-B-L-E.  Don't see us partin ways until I can pass along to someone I can trust her to. It's one of them money can't buy, but one day will go fer nutin. It's only second to my Rem 742 woodmaster 30-06 that I've had since my 16th B-day,about 25years ago. Where's loyalty gone to these days.

   The 280 Rem is an unappreciated round.  In the hands of a handloader it can compete with the 7mag.  It has a wider selection of bullets than the 270, will out perform the 270 with heavy bullets and the 30-06 with lighter bullets.  It sounds to me like your going to cheat on both of our true loves!  I shoot 140gr and 160 gr Sierra spbt in my 700Rem.  I load IMR 4350 and get 2900 fps with the 160's.  My son's 7600 likes them a little slower but its accuracy is fantastic.

LOL.... :D

I just thought that the time and money for another rifle would be better spent on something outside that little bitty box.  8)

That was my first thought, too, but "want" is as valid a reason as "need".

Still, I'd take a look at the other firearms in the stable and check out my other options.  Marlin leverguns are great fun, whether .357 Mag, .45-70 or something in-between.  My next will be #4.  In bolt guns my largest is a .300 win Mag.  Sure would like a .338 or the new .375 Ruger.

Got a .257 Roberts and a 7mm Rem Mag and don't feel the need to fill in the gap.  The 7mm/.280 gap is a lot smaller, but like I said, "want" is reason enough.  Have fun filling it, Dancoman!

The .280 is a favorite of mine and an excellent round.  It is everything the .270 is, plus heavier bullets are more common if you reload and like heavy bullets.  About the only complaint I have ever heard about the .280 that I can believe is that ammo can be hard to find.  That being said, as long as any store carries a reasonable selection of ammo, you should find at least 1 type of .280 ammo.   The worst case scenario is you run out of ammo or forget it and have to resort to the local backwoods gas station.  In this case, something more common has the edge.  Other than that minor issue which is more important to some than others, the .280 is a great round.

If I wanted heavier bullets I'd get a .30-06.  ::)

    Thank you but yes and in fact have an original rifle made by DWM. It's a Mauser M93 complete with flat (Square) bolt bottom made in about 1896-98 for the Boers. Now the original referred to which Remington obviously copied with the .280 is of course the 7x64 designed in 1917 by Herr Brenneke.

Didn't the 280 evolve from the 7mm express ?

Nope other way around. IT was the .280 Remington first then later called both 7-06 and 7 express then went back to .280 when that didn't help sales as hoped.

It is my belief that the .280 Rem cartridge is the best one rifle cartridge for all NA game.  It is not the best for any one type of game but will do the job if the hunter places the correct bullet in the right place.  It can do everything as well as the .270 Win. or the 30-06 with its large variety of bullets for the handloader.  For years it has been over shadowed by both the 06  and 270 in sales and rifle models.  But that in no way detracts from its effectiveness.  7mm magnum rounds by all the makers are way too over bore capacity for the .284 diameter with much more recoil and muzzle blast.  The .280 will effectively perform as well and sometimes better in shorter barrels than the mags.  It is a most deserved venerable round.  I wish I had one and have used one extensively.
