Muzzleloader barrel for an Ultra
« on: June 10, 2007, 06:18:04 PM »
I see on the NEF website where there are Huntsman barrels in the barrel accessory program but I saw somewhere where they weren't going to make the Huntsman anymore. Will the Sidekick barrels be replacing the Huntsman?  I just bought an Ultra in .308 yesterday and was hoping the muzzleloader barrel would be something I could send the frame in and have fitted.  I am assuming that whether it's an Ultra or a Handi won't make any difference?  Frame is the same, isn't it?  Any help is appreciated.

The Huntsman is only available as an accessory barrel, the Sidekick is a muzzleloader only, uses a different frame, can't be fitted with any other barrels. Ultras and Handis have the same SB2 frame can be fitted with any centerfire barrel except the 12ga slug and 10ga shotgun barrels,  BCs and Target frames are SB2 also, they're just case colored.

I had the H&R ultra in a heavy barreled 243 Winchester and sent just the frame back to the factory a month or so ago and then fitter it with one of their muzzle loader barrels for me. I had gotten out of muzzle loader hunting for several years but the way this new barrel shoots, I just gotta go kill something with it this year if they don't work me to hard down at the station.

Appreciate the info. Quick.  So I can get a Huntsman barrel, that's great.  It's why I bought the rifle in the first place. Do you or anyone else know if H&R/NEF is going to offer an accessory barrel in .338 Federal?

No, but I wouldn't be surprised if they offer it someday, the more requests they get for it, the more likely they'd do a run. If they do unusual chamberings such as 7x64, you'd think they'd do em in a good round such as the 338 Federal!! Although that would require different tooling for the .338 bore, 7mm bores are already made by them. Send em emails/make phone calls with your desires!!

Thanks again, Quick. I called them and I e-mailed them, too.  The lady with whom I spoke in C.S. said she'd not heard anything concerning the .338 Federal offering.  I informed her I'd love to see it and that I'd be sending them a frame if they did.  Also, as far as turnaround time for barrel fitting, she said that between now (June, for people who may read this later) and October was the best time  because they didn't have so much on their plate during these months.  She also said the turnaround time is about 3-5 weeks during this slower period.  Works for me.

I am going to go ahead and send the frame from the rifle I just bought to be fitted for a Huntsman barrel.  These primer carriers for their muzzleloaders, do they last very long or is it necessary to have a lot of them on hand?

I can't answer about the primer carriers, the Huntsman/Sidekick isn't legal here. :-\ The Huntsman forum would be the place to ask if you don't get an answer here.

.308 Win

I seem to get about 5 or 6 shots out of the carriers and they are done.  Just my experience.  Others may have better luck.

Thanks, Darat.  I guess it would pay to have many of them on hand if you were to do much shooting at all. Does the Huntsman shoot accurately?  I don't even know if they accept the "magnum" charges or not.  Guess Quick was right.  I need to check out that forum devoted to the Huntsman.  Thanks to all.

I have a Huntsman with a 24" barrel. H&R recommends only 100 grains of powder for the 24"s and the new 26" barrels can be loaded with 150 grains. As for the primer carrier, I have shot mine about 20 times and still using the first one.

I am still using the same 5 that came with my gun 4yrs ago and probly 300 rounds some one also is making the breech plug for them that uses the 25acp case for primer. I got one for my encore and it works very well and much cleaner. Kurt

Wow
I have no idea how you guys are getting the carriers to last that long.  What primers are you using?

As for accuracy, my stinkn huntsman is what got me started in this mess.  It is extremely accurate.   Ihave the 24" barrel.  The paperwork that came in mine said 100gr of powder as well.  I gotta be honest.  As accurate as mine is, I wouldn't want anything different.

I am using the Remington Kleanbore primers. This is my first muzzleloader and it shoots really good and I like the balence of the 24" barrel. I would like to try a 26" SS one next, not that I have any current plans.
