problem ejecting shells with barrel inserts
« on: June 11, 2007, 04:13:44 PM »
I have a Beretta silver pigeon II 12g o/u and decided to put in Briley ultra lite 20 g inserts. When I'm on my 3 rd round of skeet the top barrel every so often fails to eject the shell (ejector remains in place) and I use a stick to pop the shell. It has never happened when firing without the inserts. In addition, the top choke tube freezes in the barrel and when it cools down it's easy to remove. If, I let the gun cool down the shells start ejecting and freezes when the gun heats up. Has anyone else had this problem with inserts? If so, is there a solution?

Are you using the newer Revolution tubes or the older standard tubes? I am using the standard tubes in 20,28 and 410 with no troubles. A friend of mine is using the newer tubes and had a few problems with ejection. To my knowledge the only thing he needed to do was a good cleaning and everything worked fine. Are these tubes fitted or the drop in? Maybe they are moving around a little. If problem persist I think I would consult with Briley.

these are called Companion drop in 20 G ultra lite. I'll contact Briley and see what the problem could be. Thanks.

High brass shells and shells with steel rather than brass for a base both seem to be giving fits to the folks shooting tubed guns at our range. One guy was having an almost impossible time using RIO 20 gauge shells in his tubed O/U so he went back to shooting Federals and no more problems. I shoot separate guns for each gauge rather than a tubed gun and none of them give me any problems.

The Companion tubes are not nearly as tight a fit to your barrel as are the custom tubes so you'll likely need to use some aluminum tape to fit them to your barrel. One guy had his come out almost every time he opened the gun until he did that.

I've just never warmed up to the idea of tubed guns. I had a Krieghoff with tubes but decided it was just too danged heavy and was making my back hurt so much I just sold it off and went back to my individual Browning guns for each gauge.

Briley told me to slightly file the edges of the ejectors on the tube.
I've been shooting the federal 20g. I'm going to switch to the rem gun clubs and see how they do.

final report:
Briley's suggestion to file down the edges did nothing to help the problem. I switched to the low brass remingtons and also the Win AA's and had no ejection problems. Shot a few boxes of Federal high brass and the problem occurred again. I've shot some off brand low brass without any problems. I gave 5 cases of Fed 20 gauge to my son-the payback will be that he'll buy breakfast the next time he shoots with me.
