Is This Savage Package Rifle a Good Deal?
« on: June 12, 2007, 08:02:38 AM »
Hello,
My cousin is looking for a 30-06 or 300 win mag rifle to hunt with.  The first trip would be for black bear and maybe next year or the following year he'd like to go elk hunting.  I told him either caliber would work well.  I also told him that savage package rifles are the best route to go for somebody who doesn't want to spend a ton of money on a gun they'll hardly use, but they still want it to shoot straight.

All that being said, I saw a savage 111FCXP3 30-06 detachable magazine rifle today for sale at $380 brand new.  From what I've seen locally, that's a good deal.  Does that sound like a good deal to everyone else and would this be the rifle he could go out west with some day and hunt elk?

Thanks for any input.

Sounds like a good deal to me.  I got a 110 package in 2002 for $390 or $400 (I can't remember for sure.  With tax, total bill was above $400).  It came with a Simmons 8-pt 3-9X40mm scope, a leather sling, and hard case.  I recently bought a 3-9X40 Nikon Monarch to replace the Simmons scope.  I could never get the gun to shoot better than 1.5 inches at 100 yards (which ain't bad, but most of my handloads were in the 2-3 inch range).  I wondered if it might not be the scope.  Haven't been to the range with the new scope yet.

Sounds like a good deal to me too. :D I paid about $300 each for my Stevens 200's at Duck Hill. The 111 is a nicer finished gun. The 30-06 is a great gun for Elk. The only way you would need more if you are going to stretch the the range way out there. Bullet construction and placement is very important and when you get way out there most guys can not shoot that well any way. ::)

Sounds like a good deal to me.  He can always upgrade the scope, sling, stock when he gets more cash.  Meanwhile its ready to hunt with.

From what i`ve read on different sites ref: Savage package  deals ( rifle, scope, etc.)  most are in agreement that they (the package) is a good investment. Plus, they shoot very well.

Thanks for the help guys, I ended up going with the stainless steel package with a blind magazine.  For the extra $50 I'd much rather go with the stainless.

yeah that's a good deal. i would also look at the mossburg rifle and now they have a scope combo. i think the scope is a BSA or a tasco. i looked at one in the .223 for varmint and at Nichols store it was $296 even and it was marine coat stainless.
