With the exception of 3006, 30-30, and 22LR, what is your favorite caliber?

My favorite caliber is 30 or .308 since it fits so many cartridges and there is so many options, probably more than any other caliber. I think the definition of "caliber" is 1/100 inch.

As Drilling Man points out, there is a huge difference between caliber and cartridge.  Since you list two .30 caliber cartridges though, your meaning is clear.

And my answer is...

.257 Roberts.  And when it's not its .45-70.  Or .375 Win.  Or 7mm Rem Mag.  Or .300 Win Mag.  Or .22-250.  Or .44 Mag.  Or ..

TribReady, what is the best lowest cost 8mm out there?  I know the Yugo's are out there.  Are they any good?  Also, what do you hunt with your 8mm?  What is the largest game the 8 can safely and ethically bring down?  and at what range?  I just love the Mauser action.

Yugo's are good and you can find pretty nice quality for under $150. I prefer a German k98--slightly smaller stock and mine shoots better.  Those are your 2 best military surplus options.
REmington makes an 8mm in the model 700 I believe.  I've seen Remingtons online a few places and heard good things.

I purchased a Swedish 8mm sporter rifle from allans armory (www.allans-armory.com).  Great guy to deal with, very fair pricing, and very accurate descriptions and pictures.  I picked up a great 8mm with my C&R license (shipped right to my door). Rifle looks awesome and shoots moa with S&B 8mm 196gr ammo.  Rifle was manufactured by Husqvarna in Sweden for hunting, not military.  Came drilled and tapped, unlike a milsurp where you have to modify to scope it or use a removeable scope mount like the Iron-Elite which adds weight.

I've used my 8mm only on deer so far here in WI.  I'm planning an elk hunt for 2008 as we speak.  Although I've had awesome success and kills on deer with the S&B ammo, I'll probably change to either Hornady Custom or Nosler Custom ammo.  The Hornady is priced better, the Nosler comes in Accubond, Partition, and Ballistic tip.  All these options except the 150gr ballistic tip fire a 195-200 grain bullet at over 2500 fps.....look out elk!!   :)

  Dixie Dude,

The 8x57 loaded with 200 NP's is an excellent round with enough energy and penetration to easily take down even the biggest moose, as long as you keep your shots to reasonable ranges...  I wouldn't call it a brown bear round though...

I've also taken all kinds of non dangerous game with mine from moose on down,  i'm very pleased with it's performance on big game...

I dont have a favorite caliber but there are some rifles I use more than others . for plinking tin cans  22 LR, for prairie dog pups 17 HM2 or 17 HMR, for longer priairie dog shooting the 204 Ruger or 220 Swift, for prong horn and mule deer the 270 Win or 264 Win, for elk the 340 Weatherby.  But I do enjoy shooting all of them..
