It use to be the 243. With it I killed deer, turkey, and groundhog with no problem. I never knew I had a underpowered rifle until I started reading gun rags in the 80's. When I moved to Alaska it was the 300 win mag in the 90's. When I moved back to the lower 48 It was between the 308 and 243. But the last few years its been the 45 colt in a trapper model lever-action rifle. For the ranges I now hunt its all I need and when properly loaded its a surprisingly powerful 150yd rifle. When down loaded it is about as loud as a cap gun, but kills small game out to 30yds or so without problem. SO RIGHT NOW ITS THE 45 COLT WITH THE 243 IN A CLOSE 2ND. Dave

Caliber 6mm; cartridge 243/06 Wildcat &/or my 243-Win.

For the Wildcat up to Elk sized big game with bonded 100-gr bullets.

How those two cartridges compare: http://www.udarrell.com/hunting_shooting_ballistics_frames.htm

I would prefer the 7mm caliber for elk & moose. - Darrell

I have yet to meet one I didn't like, tend to like the 7mm's the best from 7-30 waters to 280 Rem, I got over the magnum thing several years ago.  45 colt and 357 are other favorites in rifles and handguns, but the 44 is in there also.  Guess I have to agree with Richard, The one with me is my favorite when it's time to dance.  DP

.223 rem is great to load and shoots well for me. everything from 50g to 75g
.303 br biggest cartridge i'll ever need. that old rifle has no business shooting that good

.375 Belted Rimless Nitro-Express, aka .375 Holland & Holland Magnum.  I shoot a pre-war (1937) Winchester M70 standard grade.  It can put three shots into .996" at 100 yards with my handloads; I have never been able to best that with any of my other rifles.  Recoil is very tolerable for how much power it can dish out.  Those long tapered cartridges feed so easy, and extract just as nicely.

I have lots of calibers I like a lot, favorite depends on what and where I'm hunting. If I had to pick just one caliber, it would likely be the .30 cal. If I had to choose just one round in that caliber, it would be the .30-06.
Sorry it goes against the original post, but you can't discount something that has worked so well for over a 100 years. ;)

My money gun has always been my 270. If I could have only one rifle that would be it. That being said, Every time I pick up my custom Rem. 600 in .308, I fall in love all over again. The old 270 has just been to good to me. It's a good thing we can only have one wife! ::)

mine is the 7-08. It has a mild kick, extremely accurate and I never had a deer run more than 25 yards

.338 Win. Mag.  You can load it down for deer, and up for groundhogs and grizzly.

Its a tough call. 270 or 45-70.  I guess it depends on my intentions.

In the handgun arena its the 45 Colt.

I have .45/70, .444, .300 Weatherby Magnum, .30-06, .308, .30/30, 7mm-08 and .260.

If I were forced to get rid of all but one it would be a tough choice between the .30/30 and .260

An ol Marlin 336 and a rem 700 can cover alot of ground

The most instant/bang-flop/dramatic kills I've made on deer were with the .30/30

and I was always told it was a lousy round.... ::)

I have 4 rifles chambered for .308 Winchester.  I think that might be a hint.  :)

I also have 2 revolvers and a lever gun chambered for .357 Magnum, so that one's probably a close second, though I really do like my .41 Magnum revolvers...

I do like the 8mm Mauser, but I can't bring myself to sporterize a mil-surp gun, and the bolt's on the wrong side for me anyway.  Maybe someday I'll be able to custom build a lefty gun in 8mm Mauser, but the funds just aren't there for it right now.

???  ::) favorite calibre  ??? Hmmmmm I really couldn't say I am partial to quite a few cartridges too. Calibre is size of bore and I suppose I like the .26 cal or 6.5mm as I have rifles chambered for three different 6.5mm cartridges but then again I also have .30 cal rifles chambered for three different cartridges and am working on a fourth  ;) . Now have four rifles in 270 Win and I do like that cartridge  ;) Now of course .308 has to come high on the list of highly regarded cartridges.

Nope the more I think of it the more I reliase that I cannot choose a favorite  :-\
