Not the best for all jobs, but my all around favorite is the 7.92x57 Mauser.
(since we can't choose the .30-30)

Why can't we say 30-06? IMHO it is the greatest cartridge ever developed. Setting aside the '06 my favorite is the 7 x 57 Mauser-parent of the '06. A distant 2d (3rd) would be the 375 H&H. Nothing post WWI for me.

I think we have so many good cartridges that we confuse ourselves, so it is difficult for me to pick one. I don't use this one very much, yet it has a very broad potential for excellence in many applications at a variety of bullet weights and constructions. When I have used it the results have always been excellent. I own more rifles for this cartridge than any other - yet by the default of being too busy I choose others (the old standbys) more for hunting. But really, this is the cartridge that intrigues me the most and when I am retired, I intend to reload more and explore more. The good old 6.5 Swede.

My favorite caliber is 7mm. My favorite cartridge is the 7x57mm in a modern rifle. It just gets the job done, period! Tom Purdom

OK, 30-06 is my go to gun. It's all I need and more for where I live, and the hunting that I do.
But my favorite is the 9.3x62

I knew that the 30-06 or 30-30 would be the majority if I asked. I just wanted to know what was the next most popular. I am really surprised at the 6.5 Swede caliber.

Well, add me to that list too. I'd have to say it's my favorite to load for and the most pleasurable to shoot. Those Swedes and Norwegians came up with a winner in that cartridge.

Ya know, I thunk and thunk on this question, and I can't say I got a fav-o-rite.
I got a good many from 22 through 35 then a gap to 45 and I just can't say I prefer one over the other. Cart-a-ges are kinda like wimmins. Ya got little ones and ya got big ones, but they can all get the job done!
So when I feel the need for companionship I pick one that strikes my fancy at the time, and dance!
