Hello from Georgia,

My favorite has always been the good ol' .308 WIN, but after I recently acquired a .300 WIN MAG, I can see where it may overtake the shorty round as my pick. With a .308 MAG you can do more different stuff than from any other round. I will soon be loading some 125 gr. screamers, as well as some 220 gr. Round nose just to see what it does and does not like. Among other loads will be some moderate 150, 165, and some 180 gr. Ballistic Tips. My second favorite pick would be a big, fat, and hot 45/70 !!  Have a great day.

Dave

I like the Accubond for my 338 RUM. For my 300's the win I like the 180 Hornaby. My other 300 RUM I shoot the 200gr bullet Partition. And of course my 458 Lott I like shooting the solid or the SP.

I'd have to say it is the .280 Remington (AKA 7mm-06). Easy to reload, wide range of bullets, knocks em down power, accurate out to 300 yards plus, easy handling recoil even from a light (Browning A-bolt) rifle. All the benefits of the .30-06 and the .270 in one cartridge, without the drawbacks. (My close second would be the .270)...third would be the 7MM-08.

The one caliber, that sets the standard all others are judged by.  The 30-06 period.  If I could have only one gun it would be a 30-06.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

If I had to just have one rifle it would be a 25-06. That will do for all my center fire hunting. But thank goodness I don't have to just have one rifle.

the three cartridges you listed are all just about identical in ballistics, with the exception of the slightly slower 7mm-08. There are just as many bullets available for the venerable .270 and at a fraction of the cost. What drawbacks does the .270 have again?  ;)

I know there a lot of 30-06 die hards. Always will be and that is cool by me, but ya know what the .270 did for the 30-06? It smoked it.

The 358 Winchester!!!!  It is the ballistic equal of the the 30-06 due to the greater expansion ratio.  Check the manuals, with the 180 to 220 grain bullets the 358 is just as fast and generally will get the same speed out of shorter barrels.  Nothing knocks down small to medium big game like the 225 grain at 2,500fps.  For larger animals its hard to beat the 250 grain at 2,350fps.
Not just my opinion either none other than Col. Craig Boddington says its his favorite caliber in 35 bore.  Not flashy or fancy, it just works!!

You forgot about that "important" number called S.D..  When you factor in "that" into the 30 cal equation, it more than evens that score.

As for Boddington, with the HEAP of legal ?, trouble he's into with his "other" lies, i'm thinking his credibility is headed down the drain!!

And, yes i do like the 358 Win., it just can't be compared to the 30-06 in the way you suggest.

It appears he's been allowing some shady deals to take place for his personal gain.  He's been promoteing those deals "knowing" that it's false info, because he and his family has invested in that company.  We'll see how it shakes out...

Very true past 250 yards, up to that point the 358 hits quite a bit harder due to the larger bullet diameter area.  I know there are quite a few folks that take shots over that distance, but I've never been one of them.  In all my years (40) I've only taken 1 shot at game over 200 yards away, and most were more like 125.

I too was unaware Mr. Boddington was having legal troubles.

I guess you are talking about shooting deer?  Pretty much any decent caliber rifle will easily do that job, but when push comes to shove on bigger animals, i'd take a properly loaded 30-06 over the .358 Win. EVERY time.
