SUPER BULL on contender
« on: June 14, 2007, 10:04:08 AM »
Has anyone ever put a 1.0 in diameter bull barrel on a contender, instead of the standard .810 dia barrel? I think it would be neat to do something a little different. I thought about having the barrel turned to .810 for about 2.5 in(or whatever is necessary) then taper for an inch or so to the orig dia of 1.0 inch. This tapered section would more than likely be covered by scope and base, so not really noticable. or, I thought of doing a 'slab sided barrel', where the barrel connects to the frame.

Has anyone done this? comments would be appreciated.

You might have trouble mounting a scope on that barrel.  It would depend on the O.D. of the Objective bell.  With a difference of about 1/8" in height from the breech end of the barrel to the point where the Objective bell would hit, you would need some tall rings.  With open sights, you would have to have the rear sight sit 1/8" higher than normal or a shorter front sight.

Quite a few years ago I had Bullberry make me up a 5" Super Bull Barrel in 45ACP. The barrel starts out with the normal size that will fit within the frame and then expanded up to 1 1/4" which was the diameter of the blanks that they were using. They also make up a short mini-forend for it. I had it drilled and tapped only for rear sight and used a little old T/C Insta Reflex Sight. I used the Pach. gripper grip and painted the walnut forend satin black. The little Cannon looks really different and shoots well. I am still getting the same velocity as a standard 1911 45ACP with a 5" brl. even though the gun looks like a snub nose. The gun is fairly heavy as I think the barrel weighs as much as a normal T/C 10" brl.  They used a recessed crown and from the front it looks like a bull barrel target rifle.

Hi
I too have a Bullbery barrel. Mine is 15 inches, 1.16 in diameter. Starts out "normal" has a radius at the end of the frame and steps up to the 1.16. The scope mounts on the large part of the barrel and hangs over the skinny part. My barrel is in 32-40, I bought it on Ebay, so have no idea how old it is. I'm trying to shoot it the way they shoot schuetzen, with the lead bullet into the rifling.

OTT has what they call a step up barrel.  It starts out as a standard T/C Contender diameter and increases to 1.0 inches or larger once it gets by the frame.

If you want a heavy barrel and little if any recoil this is the way to go in my mind.

I shot a 50 short once.  50 caliber bullet coming out of a shortened 50 bmg case.  The barrel was machined to fit the contender frame and somehow center that big case in front of a firing pin.

I shoot silhouette and a good stout contender load will knock the rams right over.  An off center hit will often spin the front or back around a little.  This 50 short took the ram back about 3 feet before it fell over.  It was stunning to say the least.  Recoil wasn't that bad tho...
