Ammo Recomendations
« on: June 14, 2007, 12:03:46 PM »
Hello, I've been lurking for a while and haven't found what I'm looking for so here goes.
I have a Winchester 9422 w/Bushnell 4x22 scope that has been languishing in the closet for many years. (Received it for high school grad 1972.)
I would like to start shooting again and was wondering if there have been advances in 22cal ammo that I should be aware of.
What is every ones recommendation for this rifle?
I'm sure it probably needs to be sighted in and would like to have the "good" ammo on hand for this.
Thanks in advance. This is a great group of forums.

The number of choices out there are amazing and you'll need to test as many as you can for (a) what you want (price, accuracy, velocity) and (b) what suits your own gun. My 9422 likes CCI Mini-mags (hi velocity) and Winchester Dynapoints (bulk pack, relatively cheap), but yours could well be very different.

In terms of new advances from when we both graduated high school (1972 for me too!), I'd say two major changes. First, a variety of some really high velocity ammo (CCI Velocitor, Remington Yellow Jacket or Viper), as well as lots of high quality target stuff (Eley Match). Finally, it is so much easier to order ammo via on-line vendors such as Midway.

For more, go to Rimfire Central (http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/index.php), where they have specific sub-forums for .22 ammo.

Good luck and good shooting!

I agree every gun may like a different brand of ammo so try all you can to see what it likes best. Some guns are pickier that others some seem to like a lot of stuff fairly well and shoot alll of them good though some may be a lot better than others. Some are picky and only shoot a few brands well with the others so so. Only way to know is test every brand you can find. Then when you find a brand it likes stock up.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

Yep, .22s can be finicky about which ammo shoots BEST, but many if not most will shoot WELL with at least some brands of economy-priced ammo. A good place to start is those bulk packs of Federal and Remington loads at Wally-World.  They may not be the MOST accurate load in all of my .22s, but they shoot well enough for 90% of my shooting, and allows me to shoot frequently, which, to me, is the main reason I own so many .22s!!
