Need Some Help
« on: May 27, 2003, 03:08:06 PM »
I have never hog hunted before cause we don't have them in KY. I hunt deer and turkey, but I plan to take a trip to Tennessee to hunt wild boars in September. What do you look for in a hog? Tusks? Weight? What is a good hog? I plan to hunt with my bow.

Are you planning to try this on your own on the public land in TN which has hogs or will you be going to a lodge or preserve? If the latter let the guides know what you want and have them tell you when the one in front of you fits that description.

Seldom in a hunting situation will you be able to see the tusks well enough to make a shoot or no shoot decision based on that factor. So size is generally the deciding factor. What is a good one? Dpends on what you are looking for. If just a meat hog to eat about 100 pounds is an excellent size. If a trophy is your goal you'll want one of 200 pounds or more. Not all preserves will be able to offer you hogs of that size to select from. Anything from 180 up looks good on the wall. At most places if you ask for a 300+ pound hog you'll pay extra for it.

Since you've never hunting hogs and have no experience seeing them it is unlikely you'd know a 150 pound hog from a 300 pound one on your own in a hunting situation. Trust the guide after telling him what you want.

graybeard sums  it  up  well,  good  post  but  i  have  to  admit  i  remember  when  i  had  never  killed  a  pig,  so  any  pig   in  my  opinion  is  a  trophy  especicially  bowhunting.   so my  first  pig  a  75 lb  shoat   was  a  true  trophy  size  alone  does  not  make  an  animal  a  trophy  but  yet  the  hunt,  the  work  put  into  it, and  the  success   or  failure.      make   sure   if bowhunting  be  scent  free wear  cam  and  use  a  good  strong  broadhead  such  as  muzzy   or  thunderhead   fixed blades  are  even  better  watch  the  wind  and  listen  for  snorts  grunts  and  squeals.  this time  of  yr   t  is  prob  warm  in  tenn   so  look around  water  holes   good  luck  and  i  am  glad   you  have  decided to  hog  hunt
