Range Report .223; .280 & .44 Mag
« on: June 15, 2007, 10:57:27 AM »
.44 Mag.

This was the first time out for the new .44 Mag barrel with reloads.  I had shot it a few times using factory Winchester 240 gr FN rounds.  The results with the factory ammo were very good at 100 yards with groups in the 2" range.

100 Yards:

Load:  Top:  22.0 grs Win 296; CCI 300; Rem 240 gr hp; PMC brass
Bottom:  23.0 grs Win 296; CCI 350; Rem 240 gr hp; PMC brass

The recoil was not heavy, but it is sharp.  Perhaps even a quick jolt.

.280 Rem.

I used two rifles during testing.  One is a standard Handi with pallet wood that had the barrel factory replaced last fall.  The second is a Special Edition green laminated model.  The SE model has less than a box of factory ammo fired through it and no modifications.  The pallet wood Handi has an O ring.

200 Yards:

Rifle:  Pallet wood Handi

Load:  42.0 grs IMR 4064; Win WLR; Rem bulk 140 gr PSPCL; Rem brass

The next photo shows groups fired by both rifles.

100 Yards:

Load:  47.0 gr IMR 4064; Win WLR; Sierra 100 gr hp; Rem brass

Top group - Pallet wood Handi
                 Bottom Group - SE Handi

200 Yards:

Rifle:  Pallet wood Handi

Same load (100 gr Sierra hp)

The recoil for each .280 load was very mild. These were my starting loads for each bullet weight. I still have several levels left to test.  I'm excited about the 100 gr hp Sierra's.  They ought to do nicely on the local ground hog population.

.223 Ultra

This rifle, as with many others, likes the Win WB.  I had shot American Eagle 50 gr hp through it a couple times, but they didn't seem to do as well as the WB.  My Handi .223 shoots American Eagle 50 gr hp just as well as the WB, so I thought I would get serious with the Ultra, given the Eagles are still available.

200 Yards:

American Eagle 50 gr Flat Base hp

300 Yards:

Same ammo:

I took some hand loads using IMR 4198, but didn't get a chance to test any.

Please excuse the targets.  I patch them with masking tape and use them as much as I can.   Just can't see throwing out a target with just a few holes in it.

Thanks for looking.

Evoc, Nice Work!  I plan on shooting my 280 for the first time this weekend.  I'm reloading 140 and 150 gr. bullets with different powders.  It'll be interesting to compare notes.
