What happened to the .480

Hey guys and gals,  I was just looking at the Ruger web site and I could not find the .480 super redhawk.  Did ruger discontinue the SRH in this caliber??

Companies discontinue products for ONE REASON and that is it's not making a profit. If it were selling and returning profit they would keep it but obviously it's not so they've dropped it. Simple as that.

People went to the S&W 500 or S&W460.  The 480 was available in a smaller package, but I would guess that people needing a BIG caliber didn't want to stop at half measures, so they gravitated to the big Smiths.  I know I did.

and with the 460 you could shoot 454 Casulls and 45 Colts too.......

Actually I think it was more a matter of uninformed people who THINK velocity matters in big bore handguns rather than knowledgeable folks who realize that anything over 1000 fps is completely adequate IF you do your job. And of course if you don't no amount of velocity or bullet diameter/weight is gonna make up for it. People who actually get out and use their guns KNOW that, those who get most of their info from magazines or the internet think velocity is king.

I wonder if Ruger would have done better with it  in the Blackhawk or Vaquero.  Or perhaps both.  I am dissapointed to hear they discountinued it.  I have a .475 Linebaugh that I would never trade for a .454.  Oh Well I did notice that the price went up on the SRH .480 that a local gun shop has, maybe that is the reason.

I've said all along that Ruger WILL NEVER EVER chamber any of their single actions for the .480 or .454 as it would require them to either make a new platform or to make it a five shot. Ruger will never do that as it would be an admission the current platform wasn't enough for a six shot gun and that is an admission they will never make.

I saw one at a local shop, was a 9 1/2" 480 Super Redhawk (new) for $634.75. Also saw a used 7 1/2" for $420.00 at another shop. Looks like an expensive caliper to shoot though.

couldnt have said it better!! It just didnt impress all the yuppies shooting at the ranges. They couldnt brag they had the baddest biggest fastest thing out there to all there groupies. Its to bad because in all reality it was just a big 44 mag and probably the best ballanced big bore round ever made. I have a feeling it wont die. The 41 mag went through a simular time and came back and the 480 is a much more ballanced round then any 41. I think it will return and when it does it will come back in some kind of platform that is proper for it. Personaly I couldnt think of a better hunting gun then a 480 shooting a 400 grain cast bullet at 1000fps. Theres NOTHING that would walk away from a good hit by one and the recoil with loads like that is milder then hot 44s.

What the heck is wrong with a five shot revolver? Good grief! Do they consider a FA83 a failure? I would have jumped on a .480 Bisley in a heartbeat. I just don't understand.
