TRAIL GUN SUGGESTIONS

shootall, you are one of few to recomend the 10mm. i dont know why it's not more popular,seems to be a pretty good round.some day i hope to add one to my stash.

I've had one about a year and a half , got tired of heavy guns , like to carry a handgun while hunting and big bore revolvers are heavy ! now i carry the glock , no it ain't even close to the redhawks as a hunting gun  , but close enough for a back up to a rifle !
some say its close to a 41 mag , i can't say don't shoot a 41 . i would try a deer if it was a good shot !
it is alot of gun in a easy to carry package , carry an extra mag and you have over a half a box of ammo ready !
i think alot of folks see it in the same size gun as a 45 and figure the 45 is cheaper to shoot , i wanted a flat shooting round in a light for cal. gun that packed easy ! and the 10mm fit the bill ! I have hunted in rain all day and never worried about the glock ! its not for everyone , but it works for me !

The benefits of weight is less felt recoil. If carrying a big caliber, weight is somewhat important, to me.
Jeff Cooper was kind of the surrogate father of the 10MM (Dornas & Dixon were the real fathers)in the Bren 10 pistol and he was the first to admit the heavy recoil it generated(in so light a pistol), hence the .40 S&W. Many a pistoleero bought into  this pig in a poke. Left a bad taste in a multitude of folks mouths.
Basically, it's a .41 mag for a semi automatic, and at 27 ozs.? I'd prefer a titanium framed S&W in .41 mag. and it could shoot any ammo out there, even shot cartridges.

to each his own but cci has shot charges for the 10 , and i have revolver and auto , the auto carries easier , and a 10mm in a S&W 610 had more felt recoil than the Glock ! and i just like more than 5 shots  or 6 shots ! I worry more about the 2 legged critter's in packs or wild dogs ! your choice is a nice gun no doubt !and if you are comfortable with it enjoy ! but i must ask if it fell in a creek on the trail could it be cleaned and dried as easy as a Glock ?  any choice is a comprise between use , maintenance , accuracy , ammo aval . , and cost to name a few !
I have passed the age where i need to own a certain name product or the latest and greatest , just the best tool for the job at the best price ! left pride at home !

I just got a Glock 20, it's a pussy cat with standard loads and tame even with heavy loads like Double Tap

the  20 has an extra heavy slide to soak up the recoil

I put Truglo TFOs on it and they light up day or night, add a tac light and you have a nice camping/backwoods piece

So, what kind of holster do you use to carry this rig,with a flashlight attached?

several companies make them now , most are synthetic ! I use a Galco holster and a separate mag. lite holder , would put lite on at night as needed and keep gun clean in the day !

I also need some advice in this topic.  I cannot decide between a Taurus PT1911 or a Ruger GP100 4" 357 or a Taurus Tracker 44 mag or a Ruger SBH 44 mag 4-5/8" for a trail gun to fend off 2 and 4 legged critters with the chance of running into a black bear while hiking.  My main concern would be for 2 leggers and to use as a backup pistol while hunting with a rifle in the Adirondacks.

Why would you need a backup for a rifle? Forget Taurus get American made products probably my choice would be in .44 mag., use special ammo if worried about men?

If you were worried about big critters on the trail  the Ruger 4 5/8 inch 44 Magnum is a fine trail gun. I have carried one for years in the summer. Loaded with a 300 or 320 grain hard cast the 44 has plenty of penetration. As an all round trail gun that will be used for SD and critters the 4 inch 357 is a fine choice. Hollow points for SD and hard cast for the critters. If I was to carry a 357 on the trail I would load it with a good hollow point up first and then 5 hard cast to follow. I like the Gold Dot 158 and the Buffalo Bore 180 cast or CorBon 200 grain cast. Both of these cast loads will give the 44 Magnum a run in the penetration department. The 180 Winchester Nosler Partition Gold is another good trail load in the 357.

I have a nice 1911 and a 44 (ruger SBH bisley), but I wanted something that had a light, night sights and mean.


I just got back from camping/mtn biking in Cloudcroft, NM
there are black bears there, though we didn't see any of course

I had it loaded with the DT 200g hardcast at 1300fps

15 rounds on tap, very fast followup shots, the TFO sights light up in day or night and a tac light
it was in the tent ready to go, it was nice to be able to see those sights glowing right next to me (I slept on the side of the tent, gun pointed away from me and   with nothing but trees past the tent)

I have owned numerous Glocks,  I don't really enjoy shooting them nearly as much as a nice revolver or my 1911, but the G20 fits the criteria of what I wanted.

I actually saw a Colt government model shoot under water, the trick is to (shake it) get all the air out of the gun.

SHOOTALL, I have been thinking of the Glock 20 or 29, but I have shot a G32 and didn't like it that much.  The recoil felt like the gun wanted to twist sideways out of my hands.  Is the 10mm recoil feel similar to the 357 sig?

I have the G-20 , it is a larger gun , it seems to spread the kick out better than the 357 , but i shot the 357 in the compact !
i really don't find the 20 that much of a kicker ! the357 seemed snapper that the 10 to me . not sure why the 357 would try to torque out of your hand , maybe an adjustment in grip style may help .
i would expect the 29 to be a hand full !
with regard to the glock under water , if it is under water how would one shake the water out of the bbl ?
the test i saw said the glock bbl would work because of the rifling type , the powder charge contained enough oxygen !
it was good on shark's out to 2-3 feet about as good as a bang stick , but easier to carry ! Glock has an add that eludes to the use on shark's by divers ! no i have not tried it , buy i could see the advantage of the option for some one fishing or boating where large animals or critters that may view ya as a meal could be encountered !

the G20 is a pussy cat to shoot even with the stoutest DT loads
MUCH easier that a G27 40 and less snap than a G23 40 (I have had both)
in fact, it's softer shooting than my full sized steel 1911 with 230g practice loads

i may not know much about glocks or stuff like that but i have been in the woods a lot here in FL. The biggest thing here that might attack you are hogs but they don't cause muchs problems( VERY bad eye sight) but you do need a gun that has 3 things here. One it has to work in salt water, mud and stuff. 2 it has to be in a cal. that can get food if needed and kill small game or pest. 3 it should be easy for you to carry  all day. if it was me the glock in 45acp is the way to go because if need i could shoot shot-shells and most big game can be kill with that cal. also as for under water shooting unless you are at point-blank range you can't kill stuff. I know people that have guns on there boats and 357,12ga, and 44 rule the day all in SS. also sharks unless feed are not a problem. I have fish for them for the past 8 years and had to go in the water a few time(don't do this)  and i have never been attack and if you do shoot a shark that will not stop them( tom put all 17 from his glock 17 into a shark and it kept comeing)  also really whats the threat?  Is it bear, cat, or people? becuase anything in the water your out of luck.
