Hot Peppers

I have been hearing an ad on the radio about a Hot Pepper for sale at one of the local Plant Nurseries.  Yesterday I was in the area while out Car shopping, so I decided to pick up two of these plants in 3" pots.  I planted them in the Garden late yesterday afternoon.

According to the commercial, these peppers have a Heat Rating of 1,000,000 and are supposedly the hottest pepper in the World.  They come with a disclaimer concerning consumer use.  It was also recommended that you use Disposable Latex Gloves if you handle them.

The name is 'Bhut Jolokia', and is either from India or Pakistan.  Does anyone have experience with these peppers?

I like hot peppers on some things, whether I can handle these has yet to be seen.  I'll let you know in about another month.

 Don’t care much for them hot peppers!  Latex gloves are a good idea.  One year I planted some and had a great crop.  I thought it would be a good idea to cut some up in small pieces and dry them to add a little zing to my cornbread later.  I cut them up and laid them aside to dry and then proceeded to clean up and wash some dishes.  Soon after my hands hit the hot water they began to burn. I dried them off and then ran cold water over them.  They still burned.  I washed them in rubbing alcohol and then put every solvent or lotion I could find in the house on them and they still burned.  To make matters worse I suddenly got a call from nature and was afraid to touch myself….Don’t much like them hot peppers, they make the sweat break out on my forehead and other places.

Yea, I pulled a good one year before last, I put a load of Habaneros into the dehydrator and had it set up in the garage.... Opened the door to go into the garage the next day... I think mace wouldn't have hurt as bad, had to open the overhead door and leave it open for a couple of hours before it was safe in there again.

jvs,I really like hot pepper.I grow habaneros every year and really enjoy them.I'm not one of those people who cooks with them or cans them.I only care for the fresh pepper itself.If these "Bhut Jolokia" are hotter than habaneros or the Scot Bonnie,I really would like to give them a try.Iam going to see if I can find some at garden stores around here.Is it a hybirn pepper?If I can't find,maybe you could send me a couple for me to try........Rick

Check out the link that Greg put up there, it has a small article about the bhut jolokia.  Supposedly, they are about 4 times hotter than the Red Savina, which was the leader until this one showed up, and almost 10 times hotter than a Habanero.  Whether that is all hype, I dont know yet.  To my knowledge, it is not a hybrid, but native to India.

If you remind me later in the year, after I get a couple of peppers, I can mail you a couple of seeds for you to try for yourself next year.

I don't know how wide spread they are in the nurseries.  I am sure the seeds had to be special ordered early on and started by the nursery back in Feb.  I also don't know if any of the Seed magazines had any for sale this year either.
