Are magazines going"out of style"
« on: June 17, 2007, 04:14:41 AM »
I'm looking for an outdoor[hunting] magazine to submit a manuscript to. Seems they are going out of style. I've tried field and stream and fur-fish-game[i have been published in ffg previously.] they are not ready for my story right now. I just am not up to date on what is out there in the way of outdoor books who might be interested in a down home coon hunting article. Any suggestions, fellas?

Maybe instead of a magazine you could try a regional periodical. Here in Illinois we have Midwest Outdoors. All articles about local fishing and hunting. The only magazine I can think of off the top of my head is North American Hunter. They're more about big game though. I notice too that alot of mags are game specific, or weapon specific. Good luck with the search.

If you have some basic knowledge with computers there are a lot of on-line magazine programs. Have you ever thought of starting your own magazine? my wife and I just started one on homesteading it took time to get through the learning curve but things are looking up. Our first issue went on-line June 1st. and has had a great response.

IMHO with few exceptions magazines and newspapers are going out of style. It's partly the due to the internet, but often the publications help to bring their demise. Over half the pages are advertisements, some magazines you have to wade through several pages of ads just to find the table of contents page, with some of them it's difficult to find the article that is tauted on the front page, the information is three months old by the time it goes to print, and the articles and editorials are tainted by the advertisers.

Sorry, not what you are looking for, but I do think the print industry is going the way of the dinosaur unless they evolve.

I lost interest in the gun/hunting magazines maybe 20 years ago.  Previously they had published good info on loading, in-depth home gunsmith/repair articles, informative data on the manufacturing of guns, scopes, loading gear, hunting stories from the giants of fair chase, etc.

Today the hunting stories are bits of casual fluff for promoting the use of gadgets and guides while extolling the merits of ungodly long shots because they can't work any closer it seems.  Nothing of value to the home tinkerer past buying a jewel drop-in trigger and huge scopes to hang over light rifles with short magnum cartridges.  I haven't seen anything giving comparative merits of any items with various design features in at least 15 years.

I don't mind the adds.  I don't have to read all of that and it does allow me to keep up with the latest gadgets but I don't like for it to control content.  Our magazines have chosen to go the route of today's "news" businesses, having a lot of casually entertaining but obviously goal oriented fluff and puff on trivials and trends so there's hardly anything of real value to be found in either media.  In that, the magazines have become as irrelevant as the evening "news" to me.

Tradional publications are becoming rarer each year. I would predict that in my lifetime you get the morning paper off the internet and your favorite magazine will be one that you download from sbscriber account. More and more when I subscribe to publications, I am asked if I want the hard copy or the E-Zine version...I'm waiting for the day when the hardcopy version will no longer be an option.

I like to think of myself as being responcible and green when it comes to environment, but I like having the hardcopy...so I ain't that green.
